In all of our churches a lot
is being said these days about
tithing, and a lot of folks just
don't understand what it
means. So let’s talk about it
just «mong ourselves a bit. and
iee if we can’t get it clear in
our m ^ds.
A tit nt is the tenth part of
what is produced. When God

was their land-lord, all things
came to them through Him,
and they should return to Him
a tenth of the produce. This in
cluded the seed of the land, the
fruit of the trees, and the in
crease in the herds, and flocks
of animals.
When they entered the land
they carried this law with
them, and the expenses of the
temple and the support of the
priesthood were met by this
tithe. In fact, the priestly tribe.
Levi, was left out when the I
land was divided- They were
to live on the tithe.
When Jesus came this law
still existed, and He approved
of it but called to mind their
neglect of the spirit of God's
law. In Matt. 23:23, He says:
“Ye pay tithe of mint, avise
and commin, (this was season
ing. like pepper and salt!) But
have neglected the weightier
matters of the law, judgement,
mercy and faith; these ought
ye to have done and not to
leave the other undone."
In other words He approved
of their tithing even the mi
nutest things, but condemned
their heartlessness and lack of
faith.
When the Christian church
was established, and Jesus had
ascended to heaven His follow
ers, expected Him to return to
take them unto Him just any
day, so they at first sold every
thing they had, and put all in
to a common fund for all to
share and share alike.
As He delayed His coming,
and they went abroad preach
ing the Gospel, the churches
they set up naturally realized
that the work had to be sup
ported and people not only
worked to support- themselves,
but raised money to send to
those in Jerusalem who came
to want. So as time passed they
realized that the old way,—
God's way—was the right way,
and we find Paul writing to
the Corinthians, "as 1 have giv
en order to the churches of
Galatia, even so do ye. Upon
the fust day of the week, let
every one of you lay by him
in store as God has prospered
him.”
In other words, they were to
return to the God-given plan
of supporting the work of the
Lord. Nothing better has ever
been found. Wherever church
es or individuals have consci
enciously followed the system
of tithing they have been spe
cially blessed. Some how, with
God's blessing the 9/10 goes
further in the family budget
than the 10/10 without Hun.
In Malachi, He throws out
the challenge: ‘Bring ye all
the tithe into the storehouse
that there may be meat in
mine house, and prove me now
herewith, saith the Lord of
hosts, if I will not open you
the windows of heaven, and
pour out a blessing that there
shall not be room enough to
receive it!"
How about trying out God’s
plan?
CARD OF THANKS
Someone once said, "Friends
are not measured in ounces
and pounds. Nor bought at the
neighborhood store; Friends
are not counted in ounces and
pounds. They are valued in
millions and more.” We are
convinced of this from the ’
wonderful ways our friends
have remembered us during the
illness in our family. Gifts,
food, cards, visits, and prayers
of you. our friends, have been
tangible evidence of the mean
ing of true friends
Each act of kindness and
thoughfulness has encouraged
us and challenged us to face
each new day with faith and
patience. We are deeply and
humbly grateful.
Yours sincerely.
