maligned that many anglers
regard it only as the "last re
sort”.
"Tain't so.” claim the fishing
lads at Mercury outboards.
"Trolling is a challenge. While
it doesn't require the same
skills as casting, it definitely
calls for a high degree of
know-how.”
Trolling is most effective
when fish are in deep water,
which usually is the case with
large specimens except during
.^pawning. The problem, then,
is to get your lure down on
bottom and keep it there. Start
out with the plug all the way
down, then raise it a few in
ches. Let it bump frequently.
If it doesn’t, either add weight,
pay out extra line or slow
down.
When trolling correctly,
you'll hang up occasionally. If
the lure has become wedged
between rocks, maneuvering
directly over the spot usually
THE COVINGTON NEWS
allows you to jiggle it loose.
When sunken logs are encount
ered, use a clearing weight that
can be slid down the line to
jar the snagged plug free.
Almost any kind of lure ca i
be adapted for trolling. Wobb
lers are good when prospecting
around weeds. Any vegetation
that collects on the hooks re
duces the plug’s action, signal
ing the need for an immediate
cleaning. Some anglers use
weedless lures with soft guards
Others replace treble hooks
with doubles or singles, the
barbs turned upward. Some
strikes will be missed, but
you'll be able to stay at pro
ductive levels longer. And big
sis । that smash with deter
mination will hook themselves
just as easily.
Actual experience at serious
trolling, say Mercury fishing
experts, teaches the finer
points. Persistance and a will-

Rural Civil Defense
For the most part, Rural
Civil Defense is all the things
you practice in your daily liv
ing. But the nuclear threat is
greater so you must be ready
to go a little further.
Make your plans for a fallout
shelter and struck it with the
necessary supplies. Also, learn
what you can do to protect
those farm animals, too.
We don’t know that we will
ever have a nuclear war. We

our chances of surviving ar«
greatly increased if we recogn
the dangers and learn what to
do to protect ourselves and
take the necessary steps.
