Modern Techniques Tackle Top

The No. 1 demand of the

“clear span” is the distance
between points where the roof
needs support in the form of
posts or partitions.
Obviously, a generous ‘clear
span” is a space generator.
Modern roof systems are de
signed to provide it.
A striking example is the
wood trussed rafter. These
shallow triangles of lumber
“clear span” the entire width of
the house at roof level. They
are so strong that the roof re
quires ground support only at
the outer walls.
With wood trussed rafters,
the house could conceivably be
built as one huge room, since
interior partitions are not need
ed to hold up the roof. In ac
tual practice, the number of
partitions is greatly reduced

I And since partitions are not
structural factors, many living
areas can be separated with
less than full floor-to-ceiling
dividers such as bookshelves
and storage cabinets.
As this indicates, there is
a great deal more living and
storage area when space con
sumed by physical parts of the
home is kept to a minimum.
Components and panelized parts
of lumber are streamlined and
hence comform with this idea.
Minimum space is occupied by
outer walls when they are
sided with wood.
From a space standpoint, it’s
thrifty to put as much storage
as possible in area dividers
and interior walls. Storage
openings can be attractively
camouflaged with doors using
the same pattern and color of
wrod paneling as is applied to
the surrounding area.
The lumber industry Is mak
ing important contributions to
the “conquest of space.”

to magnesium deficiency, ac
cording to P. J. Bergeaux of
the Cooperative Extension Ser
vice.
Mr. Bergeaux said the symp
toms are showing up mostly in
fields that have had high rates
of fertilizer for several years,
and have produced high yields.
The Extension agronomist
said two main factors are pro
bably responsible for the condi
tion. He explained that Georgia
soils -- particularly the sandy
land of the Coastal Plain —
were inherently low in mag
nesium as well as other ferti
lizer elements. Nitrogen, phos
phorus, and potassium were the
primary limiting fertilizer
elements in Georgia soils, and
under conditions of low ferti
lization and low per acre yields,
the soils contained sufficient
magnesium to supply crop
needs.
“In recent years, however,
many Georgia farmers have in
creased fertilization rates, and
consequently their yields,” Mr.
Bergeaux continued. “Residual
magnesium has been drained to
low levels. Continued high use
of nitrogen, phosphorus, and
potassium -- without the addi
tion of magnesium — has re
sulted in magnesium deficien
cy.”
According to Mr. Bergeaux,
magnesium deficiency symp
toms have been confined large
ly to corn and cotton. He ex
plained that these crops are
most susceptible to a lack of
this element. He added, how
ever, that other crops such as
peanuts, soybeans, pastures,
etc., probably will be affected
unless magnesium require
ments are met.
He said there is a simple and
relatively inexpensive method
of supplying magnesium. Using
dolomitic lime at the rate of at
least one ton per acre will give
sufficient amounts of the ele
ment.
Mr. Bergeaux pointed out,
however, that the dolomitic
lime should be agplied this fall
if the magnesium is to be avail
able for crops next spring. He
explained that it takes about
three months for the magnes
ium in dolomitic lime to be
come available to growing
crops.
Mr. Bergeaux offered this
note of caution: “Apply dolo
mitic lime only according to
soil test recommendations.” He
said the addition of lime on
soils that have been recently
limed or have a high pH can
result in over liming. “This
condition can reduce yields due

Os Those Changes
If you are one of the many ■
people receiving a monthly so
cial security check -in this
area, you no doubt look for
ward to its arrival the first
week each month. Mr. Rawls,
District Manager of Social Se
curity in Atlanta, advises that
most of the difficulties asso
ciated with the late arrival of
checks could be avoided if
beneficiaries would notify the
Social Security Administration
well in advance of any change
in address.
Here’s what you should do
in case you change your ad
dress. Notify your social se
curity district office just as
soon as you know the new ad
dress. Remember this: you have
to sign the notice of the change
in your address and it must
be reported under your social
security claim number. Just
your name is not enough.
It’s also a good idea to no
tify the post office of your
new address. This gives you
“double insurance” that you
will get your check promptly.
This will permit the post of
fice to forward your check, if
there should be a delay in get
ting the new address listed on
the social security records.
The social security office and
the post office will not know
where you are living unless
you tell them. A letter or a
call at the social security of
fice will save you time and
worry. Better still, it will get
your social security check to
you at the right time. But re
member — any written notice
to social security about a new
address should contain, in ad
dition to the new address, the
old address, the social security
number, and the signature of
the person receiving benefits.
to trace element deficiencies,”
he explained.
The agronomist said that, on
such soils, magnesium will
have to be supplied by some
other method. He explained
that magnesium sulfate can be
incorporated with the fertilizer
analysis the farmer is using.
He added that there are some
problems involved in this
method of supply magnesium,
and recommended that farmers
consult their county agent or
fertilizer dealer for further de
tails.

Boy Scouts in Covington have a part in sponsoring
the biggest Scouting show ever put on by the Atlanta
Area Council. It's the SCOUTACULAR at Atlanta s
Chastain Park on Friday and Saturday, September 20
and 21.
They tell me it's three big shows in one, the fea
tured attraction being an original musical comedy on
the stage of the Amphitheatre where Theater Under
the Stars is held. The title is "Dark Side of the Moon”
with a cast of over 200 people and one live chim
panzee. It's about a rocket trip to the moon, and I'm
told it's hilarious. It includes several pieces of original
music and a 70-piece concert band made up of Scout
musicians. There are two performances each night.
The other two shows are a Three-Ring Circus and
a Roman Chariot Race put on hourly by the Cub
Scouts in the Horse Show Arena, and on surrounding
grounds a Scouting in Action Show by Boy Scouts and
Explorer Scouts. I understand there are some special
attractions here, too.
The SCOUTACULAR opens at 4 p.m. on Friday,
and 3 p.m. on Saturday. You can get tickets from
Scouts in your area. As a build-up to the show there
will be a big parade on Peachtree Street at 7:30 p.m.
on Friday night, September 13.
