NCHS Battles Rockdale Friday; Morgan Co. Edges Rams
New Stadium At Conyers
To Be Dedicated At Game
Next-door rivals, Newton County Rams and Rockdale
County Bulldogs, will meet Friday night at Conyers in a
game which marks the dedication of the Rockdale team's
new stadium. Both teams come up to the game with a
season-opening loss on their slate.
Rockdale was upended last
Friday by a good Jonesboro
eleven, 12-0, and the Rams lost
a heartbreaker to Morgan
County 14-12 here in Coving
ton,
The weight advantage may
tell the story Friday night as
the Rockdale team has a line
that averages 195 against the
155 pound average of the Ram
• line. The Bulldogs will also
have the edge in backfield
weight as fullback Wayne
Ingle tips the scales at 209 j
pounds.
Coaches McLaney and Fisher
are somewhat satisfied with ,
the NCHS teams’ performance :
here last week. They led the
defending Class B Morgan
BLAB SLAB
Atlanta's three TV stations are expanding their sports
programs now that football is here. WAGA-TV has Ed Thi
lenius, WSB has signed Hank Morgan and WAII has Paul
Daugherty . . . Fred Russell, eminent sports writer for the
Nashville (Tenn.) Banner says that New Orleans and Atlanta
will get the next two franchises when the NFL expands to
16 teams . . . Tony Kubek, Yankee shortstop, has two child
ren and they both were born on September 6.
The first six opponents of the Newton High Rams are
all nicknamed “Bulldogs’’. They are in order on the schedule:
Morgan County, Rockdale County, Chamblee, Forsyth Coun
ty, Winder and GMC . . . And by the way, the Rams and
Morgan County must have set a record for an opening game
with neither team fumbling the ball to the opponent . . .
How's this for unselfishness? Dick Groat of the St. Louis
Cardinals was asked what was his biggest thrill in playing
baseball in his life. He replied “When Bill Mazeroski hit that
home run that won the World Series for the Pirates over the
Yankees.” You’ll note that he didn’t mention any of his per
sonal feats.
Coach Bobby Dodd says that his backfield this year will
be the fastest he has had at Tech. That's quite a statement in
view of those fine backs he had in 1956 — Jimmy Thompson,
George Volkert, Paul Rotenberry, Wade Mitchell and others.
In case you want to play some college football and can take
it, just enroll at Kentucky under Coach Charlie Bradshaw.
His squad this year numbers only 40 players . . . Imagine
a baseball manager who may get the axe after he wins a
pennant? Rollie Hemsley of the Indianapolis International
League team may get the gate just because his bosses thought
the Indians should have run away with the title instead of
a one-game playoff victory at the end of the season.
Wayne Zahn, after leading the bowlers until the final
round of the San Diego Open, came in 11th in the meet.
Wayne is still among the money winners on the PBA tour . .
Homer Sharp, supervising principal of NCHS, said last week
that the 1962 home gate receipts from football were the low
est in years. Two of the prime home games (Rockdale and
Monroe) were played on rainy nights . . . Fred Lorenzen has
set his sights on $125,000 this year as a stock car driver. He
has already topped the SIOO,OOO mark.
A sign on farm field fence read “Fine For Hunting”, and
the hunters proceeded to do just that.. . Major League record
for home runs with the bases loaded is still owned by Lou
Gehrig. He had 23 in his career . . . Jimmy Womack, a guard
on the Rams’ 1953 football team was inadvertently left out
of the article in last week’s Special Football Section in The
News. Jimmy is now teaching in the schools of Cammack,
Long Island, New York.

Ga. Tech-Florida
Clash Saturday
Georgia Tech and Florida
will get the major college foot
ball season of 1963 underway
Saturday as the two SEC
schools clash in a National TV
game starting at 1 o'clock at
Grant Field.
Both teams are nationally
ranked in the pre-season polls
and the game is rated a toss
up. Florida is reported to have
its best team in years and only
last December downed Penn
State in a Gator Bowl attrac
tion 17-7.
Most eyes Saturday will be
focused on Tech Quarterback
Billy Lothridge and Florida's
Larry DuPree. Both are ex
plosive and the game could de

Tech's Bobby Dodd is in his
19th year at Tech as headman.
He says that team speed this
year will offset heavy losses in
the line. Tech had its biggest
team last year with a line that
averaged 222 pounds.

3,500 See Rams Lose In
Final Quarter 14 To 12
BY 808 GREER
(News Sports Editor)
Newton County Rams scored a touchdown in each of
the first two quarters here Friday evening and led th 9
Morgan County Bulldogs 12-7 until late in the game when
the Class B defending champs pushed over a TD to win
the initial battle of the season 14-12.
A capacity crowd jammed
their way into Sharp Field and
almost witnessed an upset. The
Morgan County team scored
their final TD on fourth down
with a three yard thrust by
fullback Candler Hunt. A
crowd estimated at 3,500 saw
the game.
Starting off the game each
team failed to move the yard
markers. Then Newton got the
ball on their own 40 yard
stripe. Freeman Batchelor gain
ed two yards and Jack Gibbs
got four. Fullback Jeffrey Hint
on rammed the line for seven
and a first down on the Morgan
47. At this point QB Tim
Christian faded back and hit
Co-Captain John Glass with an
aerial bomb and the speedy end
went into the end zone for the
marker. An attempted kick for
the extra point didn't material
ize and the Rams led 6-0.
In the second quarter the
charges of newly-appointed
Morgan Coach Jack Gnehm
took the kickoff on their own
30 and started a sustained drive
for the score in the second per
iod. Buck Watkins pass to Billy
Young for 14 yards netted the
TD. Ross then added the PAT
around his own right end.
With a little over three min
utes left in the first half the
Rams went to work again on a
scoring drive. Starting on their
own 42 the key play in moving
the ball deep in the enemy ।
territory was a 24-yard pass
Something New Has Been Added
To Rams' Football Coverage
A new innovation has been put into the coverage of
Newton Rams football games this fall as games will be re
ported in a quarter-by-quarter box. To our knowledge, we
are the first newspaper in the South to report a game by
period statistics.
We feel that this means of giving facts and figures in
the game will afford fans a chance to see in which quarter
the Rams are most successful in moving the ball, scoring,
defense, etc.
