FIRST CLASS
Today’s Southern Pine forests
carry the label—“second growth”
— which is a source of con
siderable confusion and misunder
standing.
Not the least of the inaccur
acies is the numeral itself. The
current tree crop is designated as
“second growth” purely to dis
tinguish it from the once famous
virgin pine timber. However, the
"virgin” forests were by no means
the first. They merely happened
to be the particular tree crop in
existence when the pioneer set
tlers arrived. In all likelihood
their predecessors were legion,
since pine trees have been grow
ing on these shores for thousands
of years.
Under modern forestry prac
tices, the "crop” concept calls for
the harvest of trees at a time of
maturity consistent with the best
quality yield. Otherwise, they
would grow "overripe” and their
value would decline.
