Life Can
Be Better
ROBERT V. OZMENT. Ph. D.
St. James Church, Atlanta
GOD NEVER FAILS US
By: Dr. Robert V. Ozment
There are reAliy only two
classes of people who experi
ence trouble. They are the bad
people and the good people.
Well, that just about takes in
all of us. The truth is, no one
is immune from trouble.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could
simply go to the church and get
a shot that would assure im
munization against trouble, fear
and hardship. The tragedy with
so many church members is
beef, nearly 7 million pounds
of frozen young chickens, 607,-
000 cases of canned peaches,
237,400 cases of canned apri
cots, 310,465 cases of canned
whole kernel corn, and 344,020
cases of canned green beans.
Recently announced purchase
plans include canned green
peas and canned tomatoes.
About 16 million children are
expected to take part in the
national school lunchrooms. The
quantities of each food com
modity purchased by the Agri
cultural Marketing Service
represent only a small part of
the total needed during the
year. The purchases are made
to assist the schools in meeting
the protein, requirements of the
national lunch program.
The surplus removal pro
grams administered by the
Agricultural Marketing Ser
vice are different from other
USDA price assistance pro
grams. Their purpose is to
widen demand for certain farm
products by encouraging do
mestic consumption. The Sec
tion 32 programs—as they are
called—provide limited price
assistance to farmers. They
make it possible to find use
ful outlets for many surplus
farm commodities and help im
prove the diets of school chil
dren and needy persons.
THE COVINGTON NEWS
that they feel in a subconscious
way that church membership is
a spiritual coat that has some
thing mysterious and magical
about it. For such a man, con
fusion is multiplied when fear
fills his heart and the dark
clouds begin to descend upon
him.
I talked with a despondent
woman recently who was asking
God ‘why?’. She had been deep
ly hurt. Her hopes were shatt
ered and her faith was falling
to pieces. She was a lovely
lady with unrelenting convic
tions about right, and wrong.
She had spent many years
teaching boys and girls in Sun
day school and had been faith
ful to God and His church. She
had never before faced such a
crushing disappointment. The
storm had descended without
warning. As the cold fog of
trouble covered her raw soul
the lamp of faith began to
flicker and her hopes faded. “I
have always worked in the
church and done my best to live
a good life. Why did this
happen to me?”
This was perhaps the first
major test of heh religious faith.
Thus far, her faith has miser
ably failed. Now do not mis
understand me. God did not
fail, because God never fails us.
We always fail Him. It would
•appear that she joined the
ciiurch and was faithful to the
church only because she |
thought this would keep her]
from being hurt and make her |
immune from disappointment.
We would all do well to exa
mine our motives for working
in the church. Do we expect
special treatment from God?
You see, the church is not in
surance against fear and
trouble as much as it is assur
ance when the way is blurred
and fear invades the heart.
I have probably been unfair I
to this lady about whom I i
have written. It is my firm
conviction that she will weath
er the storm. If she becomes a
good soldier she must get out,
of her chair of self-pity. She I
must stop insisting that God ]
answer her question, ‘why?’. ]
Instead, she must pray, “O God.
this is the toughest battle I
have ever had to fight. Give i
me the coursage to either be
victorious over it or triumphant
in it. Amen.”
GOD MENDS MARRIAGES
AND BROKEN HEARTS
I like books. As a student in I
Boston, I spent many hours in ,
stores that sold used books. I;
still browse in these book I
stores when time will permit.
Once. I picked up a book, blew
the dust off and read a most
interesting title. “IT’S NEVER
TOO LATE TO MEND IT.” The
book was priced at one dollar,
and that was more money than ।
I could spend at the time, so I
placed it back on the shelf.
I do not remember anything
about its content, but there is a
philosophy expressed in the
title that a good many people
need to know. Just think about
it for a minute. There may be
some things in your life that
should be mended.
I know a woman who will
not speak to her sister. They
have not spc-ken to each other
in over five years. This rela
tionship needs to be repaired.
I know a man who has gradu
ally drifted away from the
church. He did not mean to let
this happen, but other interest
demanded his attention. He
needs to mend this relation- ]
ship.
The other day, I talked to a
man whose marriage is about I
to break up on the rocks of un- '
thoughtfulness and mistrust.'
He called me out of despera- |
tion at the last minute. After
talking for over an hour he I
asked “Do you think it's too'
late to do something about our .
situation?”
Among other things, 1 told j

I
District Director of Internal
Revenue, A. C._ Ross, reminded
Georgians today that full com-
him this. “It’s never too late to
stop up a leaky hole in the ship
of matrimony if the people in
volved are willing to do three
things. First, you and your wife
must have a vital desire that
your marriage will succeed.
Success comes partly out of de
sire. Second, you must ask
God’s forgiveness as well as
each other’s forgiveness. Third,
you must express to each other
and to God evidence, by the
way you live, that you are de
termined to make your marri
age a success.”
Marriage is a sacred adven
ture and not an episode to satis
fy the untamed desires of the
flesh. A successful marriage is
not merely an accident. It is
the result of patience, mutual
trust and respect for each other,
and in no small measure an I
awareness of the worth and i
dignity of human personlity.
Once a lady said to me, “My j
husband and I have been mar
ried for almost thirty years. We i
have had some misunderstand
ings and disagreements, but I
can truthfully say that no pro
blem has been so great that we
did not find the answer on our
knees at night. We always take
our problems to God, and He
has never failed us.”
I tell young couples, as I
counsel with them before mar
riage, that some problem may
arise that they cannot solve.
Then, I quickly add, but no
situation, regardless of how
hopeless it looks to you is bey
ond the help of God's power.
When Israel turned away
from God, it appeared that the
relationship could not be re
paired. Solomon prayed and
God said to him, “If my people,
which are called by my name,
shall humble themselves, and
pray, and seek my face, and
turn from their wicked ways;
then will I hear from heaven,
and will forgive their sin, and
will heal that land.” (II Chro
nicles 7:14)
No life is so broken that it
cannot be mended by the love
of God. As we march down the
trail of life, it will be good to
remember that no situation is
hopeless. God can take our
shattered dreams, broken
hearts and put them back to
gether again.

Worry!
1. Worry is the underlying cause of all fear, tension, and
emotional disorders.
2 Worrv is prolonged deliberation on mattei s about which
one can do nothing, or deliberation on matters that one can
do something about, but does not, or any conflict between
the conscience and intellect or will.
3 Worry is a bad thinking habit, and results in indecision.
4. Worry can be cured by overcorrection and substitu
tion of a good thinking habit, decisive thinking.
5 Development of decisive thinking is the key principle
of this system of thinking. Like the development of any new
habit frequent review and repeated application over a long
period of time is necessary for it to become deeply ingrained
in the personality and to replace worry completely.
6. Removal of worry results in disappearance of tension
and psychosomatic and emotional disorders.
