Hurlbutt, who is beginning
his junior year, will receive
SBOO for each of the next two
years as a result of his selec
tion as the member of the jun
ior class with the greatest po
tential as a future member of
the forestry profession.
Identical scholarships were
awarded to Ben M. Rooke, Jr.,
of 116 Sterling Drive, Mont
gomery, Ala., and James B.
Gomillion of P. O. Box 91,
Milton, Fla., who are entering
the junior classes of Auburn

lanta, and the three state for
esters, A. R. Shirley of Georgia,

year will be offered to the
three winners selected here.

Parents Can Help Bolster
Student Achievement Record
Most young people, like most
adults, rarely operate at full :
capacity, but parents can take !
steps to help the child who is •
classed by educators as an
"underachiever,” according to ।
Changing Times, the Kiplinger ■
Magazine.
An article in the current is
sue of the magazine states that
about half of all able boys and
a quarter of all able girls are
in this category—bright young
sters whose marks show they
are not doing as well as they
should.
Most underachieving young
sters need more confidence and
understanding, less nagging
and reproof, the article advises.
Parents who think their child
falls in this category should
have a conference with his
teacher. ‘‘The important thing
is to find out whether he is
producing substantially below
his ability and if so, why.
“Lack of interest in school,
rebellion, frustration and per
sonal psychological problems
are causes of underachieve
ment,” the article continues.
“So are unsympathetic teach
ers and unsympathetic parents.
Boys need approval from their
fathers plus the knowledge
that their fathers respect edu
cation. They need to gain in
dependence from their moth
ers. Girls need expressions of
love from their fathers, and
mothers who are not dominat
ing and not dissatisfied with
their role as wife and mother.”
DESIRABLE POSITION

COVINGTON S LARGEST HOME FURNISHING STORK
Most students in the under
achiever category do learn th*
basic information and skill*
they need to move up through
the grades, the article points
out, but the work they turn
out is close to the minimum
they can get by with and far
below what they ar* capabl*
of.
In boys, the tendency toward
underachievement shows up as
early as the first grade and
usually is pretty clear by th*
third or fourth, according to
Changing Times. Girls aren't
generally spotted until th*
sixth grade. “Though many an
underachiever ap pea r s to ba
sailing blithely along, most ar*
deeply concerned about failure
and are disappointed in them
selves, their teachers and their
parents,” the article notes.
“They know they could be do
ing better but don’t know why
they should or how to get
themselves to make the effort.”
LOAN RATE ON CORN
For producers obtaining
price support loans on their
1963 com crop, the loan rata
will be $1.21 per bushel, basis
No. 3 corn. The price support
payment, made in connection
with feed grain program pay
ments, is a uniform 18 cents
per bushel and is in addition
to the loan rate.
