Ga. Employment
Continues at
All-Time High
Nonfarm employment surpassed
all previous levels with a record
of 1,140,200 workers on the job in
August, according to a report re
leased today by Georgia’s Com
missioner of Labor Ben T. Huiet.
This was 8,700 over the July lev
el. Over half of the gain was due
to the seasonal opening of tobacco
markets which required many
temporary workers and more busi
ness was shown in all major
groups including the opening of a
large shopping center in the At
lanta Area. These increases over
shadowed substantial declines
during model changeover at three
auto assembly plants.
The number of employed women
rose 3,600 to total 392,500 in Au
gust with more business in most
major groups. Over the year, total
employment was 28.900 greater
than August 1962. Construction
was the only major group failing
to rise.
Manufacturing employment has
risen steadily throughout the year
and has broken all previous re
cords since April. The all time
high of 358.600 in August was an
1,800 worker jump from July. A
substantial number of temporary
workers were hired in tobacco
stemming plants, seasonal gains
continued in food processing
plants, a labor dispute of sheet
metal workers was settled, auto
stamping plants made the transi
tion to production of 1964 parts
and mild increases were shown
in most other industries. These
factors more than offset tempo
rary losses due to model change
at three auto assembly plants and
product change in one firm man
ufacturing aluminum lawn furni
ture.
Average weekly earnings show
ed little change from July as
workers received $72.18 for 40.1
hours at SI.BO per hour. Les* over
time in over half of the manufac
turing industries, the already men
tioned shutdown at auto assem
bly plants, lower paid seasonal
workers in tobacoo stemming and
less premium pay throughout was
almost entirely offset by wage
increases in scattered industries
for approximately 12,700 produc
tion workers, new contracts in
ship repairs and several firms re-

TURKEY PRICES
On-the-farm turkey prices
in the U. S. will average about
23 cents during the Septem
ber-December period, accord
ing to a national Poultry Sur
vey Committee report. This
anticipated price is one cent
higher than a year ago. The
1964 turkey crop is expected
to be three to five percent
larger than the 1963 crop.
According to an article in ths
New Holland Grassland News,
haylage loses about 7% of its
weight during storage compar
