Ryder Cup Golf
Matches at East
Lake This Week
Ryder Cup Golf matches will
be played this coming weekend
at the East Lake Country Club
in Atlanta. The American team
is captained by Arnold Palmer
and the British team is headed
by Captain John Fallon.
East Lake is the home club
of the famed golfer Bobby
Jones who is almost as famous
in Britain as he is in America
as the World’s Greatest Golfer.
It was in 1926 that Samuel
Ryder, a nursery-man from the
north of England who had
made a fortune selling seeds in
penny packets, first suggested
a golf match between British
and American professional
teams. From this idea the
Ryder Cup series was born, and
in June, 1927, at Worcester,
Massachusetts, the series began.
There have been many excit
ing matches in the series that
are played every .two years, al
ternatively in the United States,
and then in England. The
Americans won the first match
in 1927, but the British team
fought back vigorously two
years later, and when the great
Walter Hagen was beaten by
George Duncan, a British vic
tory was assured.
In all, the matches have now
been played fourteen times, of
which the American teams
have won eleven times and the
British teams three. Yet one
cannot underestimate the skill
of the British golfers, who come
from the island that first pro
duced the game over five hun
dred years ago, and the current
contest at East Lake Country
Club could produce many sur
prises.

Coach Bobby Dodd’s perfect
season record went by the boards
Saturday night at Bengal Stadium
in Baton Rouge 7-6. Tech had
three scoring opportunities from
close range during the game and
cashed in on the trusted toe of
Billy Lothridge for two field

Tech’s opponent this week has
one win for the young season, a
