Dr. Irving Ingram
i Describes Trip to
I North Ga. Mtn.
By Dr. Irving S. Ingrain
President Emeritus West
Georgia College
If the religious or civic meet- j
ing is off in numbers, some one
comments that so many are off
on vacation.
Since we have been off on a
three day vacation, the vaca -
tion idea intrigues me.
Our trip with intervening
I stops had its terminal at Black
; Mountain, North Carolina. We
visited the events and people
we hoped to see, and saw others
which pleased us.
This "we" includes my dri
| ver. Therefore I want for the
sake of the story to get back
in the first person.
At Clayton, there was Dr.
I Fred Gunn, founding dean of
West Georgia College and later
president of Tift College. For
years we were neighbors on the
campus. Anne Ingram, the dri
ver, and I learned of the Gunns.
His winter home is on St. Sim
ons Island. His summer home
is on Lake Burton at Clayton.
He told us that he adheres ri
gidly to his daily program ex
cept Sunday, playing golf in
the morning and fishing in the
afternoon. He is an expert at
both.
At Dillard we had lunch as
previously planned with Dr.
' and Mrs. Wells of Statesboro in
the winter and Dillard in the
summer. Dr. ’ Wells is the
Southern College and Univer
sity representative for the
Peace Corps. They give their
attention to a Chinese pug dog
that is certainly worthy of all
attention. The Weils are Bap
-1 tists but I am sure the dog is
Mohammedan in faith. He
. prays periodically with his face
A New Dimension in Golf Driving Ranges
|Kk i
■•* ■
HS||
Reflecting the growing popularity of golf in Japan in the past
few years, golf driving ranges have been mushrooming in in
creasing numbers throughout the nation. It is estimated that in
the Tokyo area alone, more than 1,000 driving ranges have been
constructed to meet the practice needs for the metropolitan duf- —
fers. A recent addition has been the three-tiered range which
opened in the shadows of the famed Tokyo Tower. It is said to
be the largest of its kind in the world, with a capacity of ac
comodating 150 golfers at a given time. The range is open from
6:00 am. until 10:00 p.m., and is patronized by some. 1,500 golfers
daily. All practice balls are delivered to the driving tees by a
conveyor belt and are washed automatically prior to being used.
The range provides more than 250,000 practice balls which ara
retrieved only at night.

Here are the people of limited !

We enjoyed the crafts. Anne

and appreciated the program of

formerly of West Georgia Col- L

In the late afternoon we were
