Touring Newton Rams Bag Two More Victims
The Newton County Rams
added victories number 12 and
13 to their all-winning string
as they defeated Tift County
and Berrien County in the I
North-South Christmas Clas-;
sic last weekend held at Tifton,
Georgia. Friday night against
Tift County, the “never-say
die” Rams made one of the
biggest comebacks in the his
tory of Newton High athletics
as they defeated the Blue
Devils in a 48-46 double-over
time verdict.
Opening quarter found the
lead changing hands through
out as Tim Christian scored
5 points to give the Rams a 10-
8 lead after eight minutes of
action. In the second quarter
the red-hot Blue Devils out
scored the Rams 13-10 to take
a 21-20 lead to the dressing
room at the half, despite Stan
ley Harris’ 6 second - quarter
points.
The third quarter found the
Rams outscoring the home team
12 to 8 as Stan Harris added
6 more points. The 32-29 Ram
lead at the end of the third
quarter was short-lived as the
Blue Devils went ahead 34-33
on a field goal by Randy Bruce
with 5:58 left. With approxi
mately 2 minutes left to play,
the Rams’ depth, already weak
ened by the unavailability of
regular Grady Campbell and
Gary Bloodworth, suffered
what appeared to be the final
blow as spark-plug guard Ter
ry Smith left the game with
his fifth personal foul. With 38
seconds remaining in the game
and the score 44-38 in favor of
Tift County, the home fans be
gan to file out of the gym con
fident that they had severed
Newton's 11-game winning
streak.
The Rams’ full-court press
regained the ball from the
Blue Devils’ possession
and Christian was fouled
by a Tifton player. With
31 seconds showing on the
clock and the bonus rule in ef
fect, Tim added two markers
to cut the deficit to 44-40. The
Blue Devils’ Johnny Abbott
was fouled with 27 seconds
left. When Abbott’s free-throw
went astray, big Tim cleared
the boards and was immedi
ately fouled. Many fans slowed
their exodus as Christian calm
ly added two more free throws
making the score 44-42. As the
Blue Devils passed the ball in,
ball-hawk Wayne Hall alertly
tied the ball up. The toss was
controlled by Hall and was
tapped to Harris who passed to
Christian, whose final eight
foot shot fell true with one
second showing on' the clock.
In the first overtime the
Rams controlled the ball
throughout but their final shot
went astray as the ball fell off
the rim as the buzzer sounded.
The second overtime appear
ed to be a carbon copy of the
first overtime as the Rams con
trolled the ball. But with 1:36
showing on the clock, Christian
connected on a 15-foot jumper
to give the Rams a short-lived
lead. Bobby Simpson promptly
hit a 20-footer to tie the score
at 46-46. With everyone stand
ing in wild anticipation, the
Rams stalled away the seconds,
