The advertisements point
out that the Interstate Sys
tem is already preventing an
estimated 90,000 accidents a
year, saving some 3,000 lives
and preventing 60,000 in
juries during 1963.
The System has already
cut 15 hours from driving
time coast to coast —a two
day time saving — the ads
say. Time savings will be
increased to three days
when the system is complete
in 1972.
The ad series further
maintains that use of the
completed portions of Inter
state System has already
saved the average motorist
$l5O in accident, car opera
tion, and travel time costs;
and has reduced driving ten
sion by some 50 per cent.
The benefits cited by the
ads are based upon studies
made and statistics com
piled by the U. S. Bureau of
Public Roads, administrator
of the Federal government’s
share of the nation's road
program, Road user taxes
collected by the Federal
government are paying 90
per cent of the cost of the
41,000-mile National Inter
state System.
Begun in 1956, the mam
moth superhighway network
is scheduled for nationwide
completion by the end of
1972.

THE COVINGTON NEWS
This 18-year program has
been called the greatest
single building projects ever
undertaken by man. Its cost
in money, materials, and
man-hours staggers the im
agination.
Statistics of the Bureau of
Public Roads show, however,
that the tangible benefits to
motorists will repay these
costs in less than half the
time that will be required
for the system's construc
tion.
