KIWANIS CLUB URGES ESTABLISHMENT
OF COUNTY PLANNING COMMISSION
The Kiwanis Club of Cov

ly passed a resoultion calling
for the establishment of a
Newton County Planning
Commission. Ed Robinson
reed the resolution before
the members present at the
Kiwanis organization's
meeting at Legion Home.
Kiwanis thus joins with
the Covington - Newton
County Chamber of Com
merce and other civic or
ganizations in urging that
the county planning commis
sion be organized.
In the resolution, one of
the main objectives of the
planning commission is “A

WHEREAS, the Covington
Kiwanis Club believes the
public safety, service and
welfare can be advanced bj
the establishment of a New
ton County Planning Com
mission pursuant to autho
rity contained in the General
Planning and Zoning Enabl
ing Act of 1957 (Act No.
358; Georgia Laws 1957,
Page 420 et seq): and
WHEREAS, the Covington
Kiwanis Club believes that
the County will increase in
population over the next few
years, and that it is desirable
to grow in an orderly man
ner; and
WHEREAS, there will be
a need for subdivision regu
lations,zoning and building
codes; and
WHEREAS, the projected
population growth will pro
duce increased demand for
all public services, facilities
and utilities, including but
not limited to schools, parks
roads, water, gas and elect
ricity; and

NOW THEREFORE, BE
IT RESOLVED that the
Covington Kiwanis Club
hereby recommends to the
County Commissioner of
Newton County that the
necessary steps be taken to
establish a Newton County
Planning Commission pur
suant to authority contained
in the General Planning end
Enabling Act of 1957, there
by creating a Newton Coun
ty Planning Commission.
Adopted unanimously, this
16th day of July, 1964.

Is Named To
State Board
The new State Board of
Health, enlarged at the last
regular session of the Gen
eral Assembly to 18 mem
bers, was sworn in Thursday
by Gov. Sanders and held
its first official meeting in
the Governor’s office.
At this session the Board
elected Dr. John M. Martin,
Augusta specialist in inter
nal medicine, as chairman;
Dr. P K. Dixon, Gainesville
surgeon, as vice chairman
and J. Frank Myers, Dublin
attorney, as secretary.
The new Board in addition
to 10 physicians, two den
tists, two pharmacists and
one veterinarian includes
one representative from city
government, one from county
government and one from
the state at large. Mr. Myers
is the representative from
the state at large. Seven
members who served on the
previous Board were reap
pointed.
The two pharmacists on
the board are Lanier Hard
man of Covington, and John
Marshall of Camilla.
In their first meeting, de
voted largely to organiza
tional matters, the Board set
up a sub-committee to draw
up operational by laws.
The new members were
supplied information on the
entire operation of the State
Health Department, for
which they are now legally
responsible, by Dr. John H.
Venable, Health Department
director. It was recognized
by the Board that individual
members should as soon as
poss’ble familiarize them
selves with Department de
tails including visits to Heal
th Department facilities and
institutions to gain personal
knowledge of the complex
organization they now gov
ern.
In subsequent meetings
the Board will, as a group,
meet at various state health
facilities, including Battey
State Hospital, Milledgeville
State Hospital and Grace
wood State School and Hos
pital.
The next meeting of the
Board was set for August 20
in Atlanta.

a vacation through Florida
last week, going down the
East coast to Miami, and re
turning by West coast.

Position On
Legalized Gaming
ATLANTA — Georgia
Baptists have received new
assurances from Gov. Carl E
Sanders that he does "not
favor legalized gambling in
Georgia under any circumst
ances.”
The assurance from Gov.
Sanders came in the form
of a letter to Dr. Louie D.
Newton, Atlanta, chairman
of the Public Affairs Com
mittee of the Georgia Bap
tist Convention. Sanders was
replying to a letter from
Newton which cited an
article by Furman Bisher,
Atlanta Journal sports edit
or, in the July sth edition,
which advocated legalized
gambling on horse racing.
