THE COVINGTON NEWS
NCHS Fine Arts
Club Organized
For a long time there has
been an unexpressed desire
among several Newton
County High School students
for a club of which the main
purpose would be the ap
preciation of the fine arts.
Until this year there has
been no such organization.
Our dream has materialized.
The first meeting was held
in the Newton County High
School Auditorium on Mon
day, September 14 after
school. There were about
twenty-five students present
and four adults. The faculty
members who attended were
Miss Peeler, Mr. Galt, Mr.
Hartley and Mr. Najjar, our
advisors.
Our first meeting was a
busy one also. We held
election ■of officers. They
are as follows: Chairman-
Sally Hardman, Vice-Chair
man—Cathy Callaway, Sec
retary — Nancy Lewis,
Treasure -- Diane Allgood,
and Reporter -- Carol Call
away. Committees were set
up to help plan the agenda
of programs and to write a
constitution for the club. Our
candidates for RAM beauty
are Diane Carter and Charles
Reynolds.
The eagerness of our new
club members to learn about
the arts is growing every
day. Our first project was
greeted with much enthu
siasm by all. We plan to ex
hibit a traveling art show
sponsored by the University
of Georgia art students. It
will be in our school for one
week and the public will be
invited.
The purpose of the club is
the promotion of gracious
living among club members.
Music, art, drama and many
other fields are included. We
hope to attend symphonies,
plays, dramas, art exhibits,
and to study interior decora
tion, antiques, and certainly
homes. We cannot mention
the fine arts without touch
ing on one of the finest arts,
eating. Every opportunity
possible we will eat out, out
spelled with capital letters
after or before our prospect
ed plan for the evening out.
We hope our new club will
soon be one of the most out
standing clubs at Newton
this year.

Local GTEA Holds
First Meeting Os
School Year
The first meeting of the
local unit of the Georgia
Teachers and Education As
sociation was held on Mon
day afternoon September 28,
1964 at R. L. Cousins Ele
mentary and High School
with R. L. Stewart serving
as host principal and Lester
Smith presiding. The chap
lain opened the meeting,
with a very inspirational
Devotional Service Series.
Mrs. S. F. Hardeman, Miss
Carolyn J. Banks, Eddie L.
Murphy and Lester Smith
gave very informative re
ports from the Dublin Lead
ership Conference which
was held on September 18-
19, 1964 at Dublin 4-H Cen
ter, Dublin, Georgia. High
lights of this conference
centered around profession
al growth, tenure, functions
of the National Education
Association and the Ameri
can Teachers Association.
Local members of the Geor
gia Teachers and Education
Association are 100% affili
ated with both of these or
ganizations.
The members were in
formed that Miss Jacquelyn
Williams, 1963-64 Term re
cipient of a $75.00 Student-
Aid Award from the Newton
County Teachers Associa
tion, was enrolled at Spel
man College, Atlanta, Geor
gia. Miss Williams ranked
third in her graduating
class. The association mem
bers are hoping that her
work will be of high quality
as she continues her educa
tion. They realize that the
educative process becomes
more involved as the levels
move up; therefore, they are
hoping that this aid will
serve as a source of moti
vation for Miss Williams.
President Smith announced
that the next meeting of the
association would be held
at East Newton Elementary
School. Mrs. C. M. McDan
iel, Jeanes Curriculum Di
rector for Newton County
Schools announced a new
teacher Telecast Series
which is being sponsored by
the State Department of
Education. Plans were form
ulated for group leaders for
the implementation of the
series. The programs are to
reach our area through the
facilities of WGTV-8 at 3:-
30 and 4:00 on Tuesday and
Wednesday afternoons. Six
teen areas will be discussed
during this telecast series.

Naws Notes From
Sohm
By Mrs. Douglas Yancey
There is a nip of fall in
the air these days, you have
only to look out at the trees
and see the yellow tinge that
is now on the trees, which
says that the chlorophyll is
going and the first thing we
know we will have that
prettiest time of the year
and people will be going in
to the mountains to see the
fall colors. Another sure
sign of fall is this is Fair
week in Newton County

have the best booth — and
