Rams Knocked From Unbeaten Ranks 13-12$
BY 808 GREER
(Nawa Sports Editor)
The Newton County Rams will not have an all-win
ning football season this year Tucker's Tigers took care
of that fact Friday night on Sharp Field as they edged
the local high school eleven 13-12 in a subregion game.
Newton was impressive in
statistics but they just
couldn't get the ball over
the double stripes or through
the uprights for that mat
ter. The play that broke the
backs of the local team was
the Tucker return of the
second half kickoff 79 yards
for a TD Halfback Jack
Mau made the run and then
added the point from place
ment.
The Rams scored their
second TD of the game late
in the fourth period but Tim
Christian’s kick for the PAT
was again wide of the up
rights.
Tucker was decidely the
underdog as NCHS fans were
hoping for another great
game like Coach McLaney's
boys played against Chamb
lee two weeks ago. The
Rams won that clash 30-19.
For the fourth straight
game the Rams scored the
first time they got the ball.
Jeff Hinton capped a 62-
yard march by snagging a
Tim Christian pass on the
goal line for the initial
touchdown.
As this was a sub-region
nearly 5000,000 boys entered the
competition,” he said, “and re
ceived a presidential commenda
tion that said ‘Programs of this
type will enable our youth to
build the energy and strength that
is their American heritages ’ ”
Coach Fisher said entrants will
be judged on distance and accu
racy of their punting, passing and
kicking. Points will be awarded
so r each foot of distance the ball
travels on the fly, and points will
be subtracted for each foot the
ball lands to the right or left
of the center line.

A-DRIFTIN’
ALONG
The art of drifting for fish
probably started the same
day some ingenious Neand
erthal man hit on the idea
of lashing a couple of logs
together to form a crude
raft. (Any fisherman worth
his line would have instant
ly recognized the potential
of a floating platform as a
fish-getting device.)
Whatever its origin, drifting
is an accepted way of catch
ing fish that goes back a long
time. And, claim the fishing
fans at Mercury outboards,
it’s just as good today as it
was “way back when.”
Os all fishing techniques,
drifting is the easiest. It
consists simply of dropping a
tempting morsel overboard,
lowering it to the bottom
and letting the wind dictate
your speed and direction.
Though driftin’ is obvious
ly the lazy man’s way to
Junkers, it also happens to
be one of the most effective.
The lure covers a lot of ter
ritory at an extremely slow
pace and at a depth other
methods may skip.
Drifting finds greater

Bulldogs Open Home Season

even by the most avid plug
caster, particularly as a fish
finding tactic used in con
junction with trolling.
According to the Mercury
folks, a lure can be trolled
upwind past a likely looking
territory. When a good
stretch of water lies down
wind, the outboard is shut
off and the boat allowed to
drift naturally.
Even though the drift may
cover the same strip as the
trolling pass just completed,
the different type of presen
tation may prove just the
ticket on that particular day.
Driftin’s been around a
while. And it’s here to stay.
It belongs in every fisher

just use it more often.
Coach Dodd’s team is unde
feated for the season with
victories over Vandy, Miami
of Florida, and Clemson.
Saturday at Grant Field
the Tech Yellow Jackets won
a 14-7 victory over Clemson.
Two long scoring plays
brought the season’s third
win for Coach Dodd’s tearn.
Early in the first period
Quarterback Jerry Priestly
unloaded an aerial bomb to
Gerry Bussell for 34 yards
and a Touchdown. In the
third quarter Johnny Gres
ham reeled off a 54-yard run
around his own right end
for the other touchdown. The
latter drive covered 80 yards
in 6 plays.
In Georgia’s game at
South Carolina the Bulldogs
scored in the first quarter
and the Gamecocks came
back in the second to knot
the count at 7-7 and that
was the way the game end
ed.
Georgia officials have an

Bulldog game Saturday.
Kickoff time is set for 2
