Have you considered how Im
portant the walls of your house
are to your furnishings? Often
we don’t realize that the walls
make up the largest portion of
every room. The relation of walls
to windows, doors, and furni
ture is very important in deco
rating a room.
Arrangement of furnishings
should begin with your house
plans for either new or remodel
ed houses. Problems related to
wall spaces that you may want to
check are these:
Are spaces between doors and
windows wide enough to place
your pieces of furniture? Doors
or windows may often be moved
several inches or even several
feet In order to make furnishings
more easily arranged. Pieces
that have not been purchased
should be planned for in advance.
Many sizes are more or less
standard, or may be ordered a
certain size. Be sure the new
king-size bed has wall space as
well as floor space, for Instance.
Or, measure the wall space for
the new sofa and don’t forget--
you will probably need a table.
Is there space for this table,
or will it extend In front of a
window where you don’t want or
need it?
Windows should provide light
and possibly ventilation or view.
Are they placed where they may
have an attractive treatment?
The height of the window may
be raised or lowered while still
in the planning stage to make it
more attractive. Check the
placement of heating elements a

round the windows. Baseboard
heating cannot have floor length
draperies over It. Other heat
ing units may be placed on the
floor or under the window at a
place that makes window treat
ment difficult. To discover bad
placement of these during early
house planning may mean heating
elements can be shifted several
feet without any problem.
Doors need not be solid or
standard size. In decorating the
room some wall spaces are often
made useless because a wide door
swings back onto It. Folding
doors for closets or other areas,
sliding doors, half doors that
hinge on the sides and close in
the center take negligible wall
space on either side of the door
way.
Walls are Important In interior
design. They may dominate the
room or may furnish a simple
