Comm. Campbell Says State
Supply Milk is Diminishing
Georgia Agriculture Comme
ssioner Phil Campbell has ex=
pressed alarm over the dimin=-
ishing supply of milk across the
nation and has predicted the state
will follow the national trend un
less ways canbe found to increase
production,
It was during the summer of
1963 when Campbell first pre
{icted a national milk shortage,
Georgia is producing more

milk w’ fewer cows than ever
before,” Campbell said, adding
that the total production still is
above figures of the past, this
being true throughout the United
States,
However, there are factors that
have reduced and are reducing
the supply of milk in the United
States and in Georgia in relation
to population,
First, the large capital invest

M
ment needed to go into the milk
business discourages new proe
spects, he said, Second, young
people have found out they can
make better livings by working
fewer hours in the cities,
Campbell cited national fige
ures to show the basis for his
alarm over the decline in milk
production:
~During the past fiscal year
the value of the surplus pro=
duced came to $360 million, This
compares to $602 million for
the 1961-62 period,
-=The amount of surplus butter
kept in storage by the national
government decreased 61 per
cent in one year from December
1, 1963, to December 1, 1964,
--Cheese is down 10 per cent
for the same period,
-=The national dairy cow popu=
lation has decreased more than
one million since 1959,
«-The amount of milk pro=
duced in 1963 was less than the
amounts produced during each of
the preceding two years,
Campbell noted that Georgia
historically produces its basic
fluid milk needs with flunctua=
tions being caused by bad or
good weather, However, the re
duction in the total national milk
supply will eventually affect
Georgia’s milk supply situation,
«When this occurs, dairy far=
mers will not be able to go out
to simply purchase cows to in=
crease milk production,” the
commissioner warps. ‘Milk
cows simply will not be avail
able, To increase dairy cow
numbers in herds and milk pro=
duction by the growing of addi
tional milk cows will take time==
from four to six years,”

A LOT OF GUM
There are approximately 4,000
pine gum producers in Georgia,
according to Cooperative Exten
sion Service foresters. Located
in about 60 counties in the south
ern part of the state, they worked
nearly 30 million treeslast year.
And they produced almost 80
percent of the nation’s supply of
gum turpentine and rosin.
