Protest Closing Os VA Hospitals
ATLANTA-Georgla veterans
face the possibility of losing 20
hospital beds with the closing
of the U,S, Public Health Sere
vice Hospital in Savannah, Pete
Wheeler, Director, Georgia De~
partment of Veterans Service,
said Codly.
The Public Health Service has
announced it will shut down its
Savannah Hospital by 1966. The
veterans Administration main
tains 20 beds for veterans at the
Savannah facility by contract with
the USPHS,
1 have asked that the VA
consider carefully the possibility
of contracting with some other
Savannah hospital for beds for
veterans. The need is for more
than 20 beds. Nearest VA Hos
pital to Savannah is Dublin, and
that VA Center is full most of
the time.
“The closing of Hunter Afir
Force base in Savannah will in
crease the need for VA hospital
services in the area since many
retired military men, eligible for
VA treatment, have in the past
used the Hunter Air Force Base
Hospital,”” Mr. Wheeler said.

The possible loss of these
20 veterans’ beds was announced
on the heels of a Veterans Ad

Thomasville (Ga.) Veterans Do=-

1, 1965,
Since the VA first announced
its intent to close the Georgla
domiciliary, which houses almost
800 disabled veterans, Mr.
Wheeler said the following steps
had been taken;
1. At his suggestion, the De~

are the three top leaders of the
Georgia American Legion, Am=~
vets, Disabled American Ve~
terans, Veterans of Foreign
Wars, Veterans of World War
I, Jewish War Veterans and Span=-
ish War Veterans, have called
for a Congressional investiga=-
tion of the VA closing plans.
Meeting in Atlanta, the ve
terans’ leaders called upon Rep.
Olin E, Teague, chairman of the
U.,S, House Veterans Affairs
Committee, to hold public hear=
ings on the VA’s plans to close
the Thomasville and other faci

2, The Georgia House of Re~
presentatives, after passing a re
solution protesting the closing,
set up a speclal committee to
«investigate, study and ascertain
the reasons” which led to the
closing of the domiciliary.
3. The Georgla Congres=-
sional delegation has been in
formed of the adverse effect the
closing of the Thomasville Do=
miciliary will have upon the
state's veterans, by the Geor
gla House, the Department of
Veterans Service, the Depart
ment Commanders’ Conference,
veterans Organizations and many
individuals.
«‘Most members of the dele
gation have pledged their sup=-
port in opposition to the closing”,
Mr. Wheeler said.
Meanwhile, Congress itselfhas
taken action. A sub-committee
headed by U,S, Senator Ralph
yarbrough of Texas began hear=-
ings Friday on the closing orders.
