Mary Jane Stinchcomb Chosen
NCHS Homemaker of Tomorrow
Miss Mary Jane Stinchcomb,
daughter of Mr, and Mrs. Melvin
stinchcomb, has been named by
Newton County High School as
1965 Betty Crocker Homemaker
of Tomorrow. She scored high
est in a written homemaking
examination taken by senlior
girls, December Ist, and 1s now
eligible for state and national
honors. Jane is Vice-President
of the Covington F iture Home=
makers of America and Is a
Home Economic student of Mrs.
J. D. McKinsey. She plans to
enter Mercer University in Sep
tember and study nursing.
Test papers of all school
Homemakers of Tommorrow in
the state are now being judged.
The state’s highest-ranking girl
will receive a $1,500 scholar
ship from General Mills, Inc.,
sponsor of the annual Betty Croc=-
ker Search for the American
Homemaker of Tomorrow, with
the state runner-up to be award=
ed a SSOO educational grant.

stration of color television by the Bell System occurred

organization, the Boy Scouts of America, has taught good
citizenship and clean living to boys of all ages for over half a
century. This month, more than 5.5 million boys and adult

williamsburg, Va., Washington,
D.C.. and New York City.

will be the naming of the Betty
Crocker All=American Home
maker of Tomorrow. To be
chosen on the basis of original
test score and personal obser=-
vation and interviews during the
tour, she will receive an In=
crease in her scholarship to
SSOOO.
Scout Council
Marks Gains
Another successful year of
Scouting for boys from 8 to 18
was marked by the Atlanta Area
Council, Boy Scouts of America,
in 1964, according to E, K.Jami
son, council president.
Gains were shown in the fields
of membership, new units, camp=
ing, training, special merit badge
programs and activities.
There were 10,455 Cub Scouts,
10,710 Boy Scouts, and 7451 Ex=-
plorers for a total of 23,616
boys enrolled on December 31,
1964. The boys are registered
in 322 Cub Scout packs, 433 Boy
Scout Troops, and 187 Explorer
posts. A total of 515 institu
tions are chartered to use the
Scouting program in the 942 Scout
units.
The Scout advancement report
--one gauge of quality Scouting-~
showed that a total of 4497 Cub
scout awards and 3983 Boy Scout
awards were presented during
the year. There were also 11,
300 merit badges presented dur
ing 1964. The ‘‘top ten’” merit
badges were: Swimming, Life
saving, Reading, Firemanship,
Home Repairs, Cooking, Citizen
ship in the Home, Canoeing,
Camping, and First Aid.
Most Boy Scouts join their
troops because of the promise
of hfidng and camping, Jamison
said, and the Atlanta Area Coun
cil had 201 troops qualify for
the National Camping Awards.
A total of 4897 boys partici
pated in a long-term camp (6
or more consecutive days), which
represented 49.9 percent of the
Boy Scout membership.
The report on the training of
leaders showed that 60 percent
of unit leaders had been trained
and 32 percent of assistant lead
ers. During 1964, 4775 Scouters
attended 228 training programs.
