Clemson Saturday 2 P.M.
: ATLANTA—'‘We're just going
t 0 have to hitch up our belts
and work a little harder,”
Thus Coach Bobby Dodd
summed up the situation at
Georgia Tech where his Yellow
Jackets are still seeking their
first victory of the 1965 season,
Tech and Vanderbilt tied 10-10
in the season opener two weeks
ago, then lost a heartbreaker
10-14 to surprising Texas A &M
this past Saturday.
‘1 thought that our offense was
much improved in the Texas
A & M game” Coach Dodd said,
“‘ln fact, at times we looked great
‘moving the ball, But mistakes
are still hurting us, Defenslve(})f
we did well until the middle
the last quarter when the Aggies
got a spark and we couldn’t
stop their momentum,”

Sophomore backs Lenny Snow and
Kim King, and they liked what
they saw, Snow romped, stomped
and rambled from scrimmage 17
times, picked up a net 86 yards
and had the crowd standing every
time he touched the football,
It is a little early to call him
one of the great runners in Tech
History but he is certainly one
of the most exciting.
Quarterback King also passed
his initial full test in good order,
running for 62 yards and com
pleting five of eight pass attempts
for another 71, Defensively the
outstanding player on the field
without a doubt was Tech middle=
guard John Battle, Playing with
a pulled muscle in one leg that
had kept him in sweat clothes
all week, Battle time and again
wrecked havoc in the A & M
backfield,
The Tech defense really
missed injured tackles Billy Sc
hroer and Mike Ashmore who
didn’t even suit up for the game,
Schroer, with a dis-located
shoulder, will be out at least
two more weeks but it is hoped
that Ashmore, sidelined by a
severe Charley Horse, may be
ready for this week’s contest.
And speaking of this week,
there will be no rest for the
weary Yellow Jackets, The
Clemson Tigers will come to
Grant Field Saturday afternoon
undefeated and probably rated
over Tech for the first time
in many years. Not since 1958,
when Tech’s record was 4-2-1
and Clemson’s 6-1, have the
Tigers come to Grant Field with
a better mark than the Jackets,
But Georgia Tech won that
1958 contest, shutting out the
Tigers 13-0, They’ll be working
hard and overtime this week to
find ways and means of doing it
again,

Tennis "Hat Trick
Jim Gainer was a triple win
ner in Fowler’s Tennis Club
Championship this summer, On
Saturday, Sept, 11, he captured
the mixed doubles event with
Nancy Lott as his partner, They
defeated Billy Dobbs and Cathy
Partee in the finals,
Previously this summer Jim
had captured the boys’ 16 and
under singles, and paired with
Mort Winn to win the 16 and
under doubles, Thus, he won
all three events which is known
in tennis circles as ‘‘pulling
the hat trick,”
Either one of the boy final
ists, Jim or Billy, in mixed
doubles could have won all three
events, as Dobbs had also won
the boys’ 12 and under singles
and teamed with Gil Gainer to
win the 12 and under doubles,

Former Newton Ram assistant football coach Don Shea, now
at Marist in Atlanta, may have the best AAA team in the state,
His team has already won four big games this year and are un
beaten at the present time, Two of the players who have helped
the Cadets this year are John McHale, Jr., son of the Atlanta
Braves president, and Christle Hauck, son of Dr. A, E, Hauck,
Young McHale now has made a regular high school team in three
states in three years as a freshman, sophomore and now a junior

University of Georgila’s band day and the Georgia Tech band day
drew a combined total of 7,800 high school musicians from all parts
of Georgia. There were some 5,000 at Athens and 2,800 at the first
band day event at Grant Field in Atlanta ... Coach Gene Stallings
of Texas A&M is quite a nervous ‘‘cheerleader’ type fellow on the
sidelines during a ball game. At Grant Field, he reminded us of
Tucker’s Terry Hodges . .. ‘‘Poochie’’ Hartsfield, a former base
ball player and now a noted cage official, is a diamond scout for the
Chicago Cubs.
University of Miami (Fla.) Coach Charlie Tate’s team pulled one of
the biggest upsets of the year Saturday whenthey clobbered Syracuse
24-0. Coach Tate is the father of former ‘“Miss Newton County’’ Con
nie Tate, who was a student at Emory-At-Oxford when she won the
title here in the Newton Jaycee contest a few years ago. . . Tommy
Lawhorne of the Georgia Bulldogs, who played an outstanding game
Saturday against Vanderbilt, was a Georgia American Legion delegate
with Bob McGaughey of Mansfield, to the Boys Nation session at Wash
ington a few years ago.
And you think the Braves are having a bad year? Well, the
New York Yankees are going to wind up in the second division
this year for the first time in 40 years. And just think of it,
they fired Yogi Berra last year after he won the Pennant, . .
Georgia Tech, in losing to Texas A & M last week 14-10, dropped
their first home opener since 1950, ~ . The Baby Rams appear
headed for an unbeaten season. You may not realize it but, it
was just five years ago when the county grammar schools banded
together to form the Baby Ram team,

JIM GAINER is shown with the three trophies he received at Fowler’s
