ber of the 4-H Club, I carried
as my main projects, gardening
and swine.
My gardening project began
when I received the seeds and
fertilizers that would be needed
to start a small garden. That
summer I went to District in

some of my vegetables in the
county fair and won blue ribbons.
In my swine project, I got
started with the help of my fat
her. The next fall, my hog was
slaughtered and used for home
needs.
My second year in 4-H Club
work, my mainprojects were gar
dening, and livestock conser=-
vation. My beef steer wasenter
ed in the County Fair, winning
Grand Champion, and in the
Southeastern Fair, winning con
solation prize. My garden pro=-
ject was valued at about $15.00
and was utilized for home food
needs.
My third year in 4-H Club
work, I carried out my projects
of electricity, entomology, lead=-
ership, and health. I was eighth
place winner at the District Pro
ject Achievement Meeting. I
served as Boys’ Vice-President
of the Junior Council and attend
ed camp at Camp Wahsega.
My fourth year in 4-H, my
projects were electricity, en
tomology, leadership, andhealth.
I again attended the District Pro
ject Achievement meeting, winn

attended summer camp at Rock
Eagle this year. I served as
Reporter for the Junior Council
and President of my local club.
Last year my projects were
entomology, recreation as well
as leadership, land judging, and
health. I attended District and
won a Red award card.
This year my projects are
entomology, recreation, health,
leadership and I am planning
to attend District again in en=-

in the District Land Judging and
Rally events held at Griffin and
serve as Parliamentarian of my
local club. I was elected and
am serving as the Senior Council
Parliamentarian also.

This is my sth year in 4-H
Club work. I have enjoyed many
good times as a club member
and especially in my Dairy Pro=-

calf in 1958 my herd has grown
to 10 animals at the present
time. I plan to continue the

THE 4-HCLUB CHALLENGE
““Learning by doing’’ is as old
as the 4-H Club monument, This
was evident in the beginning here
in Newton County when Mr, G, C,
Adams gave his first corn club
group an opportunity to exhibit
their prize corn, These club
boys had to first plant a crop
and through their labor and ability
grow abetter ear of corn than ever
before. This type of challenge
has been before all 4-H Club
members since this early
beginning,
Many changes have takenplace
in the way of doing things on
the farm as a good 4-H Club
member wants to do, Science and
'techno'log?' has changed agri=
cultural from the small way of
producing food and fiber to hugh
operations, 4-H Club members
right here in Newton County are
assisting their parents in op
erations which were not to barely
comprehended by a farmer thirty
years ago,
4-H Club enrollment and place
of residence has changed here in
Newton County as it has else
where, About one-third of our
club members live on the farm,
one~third in rural non-farm
areas, and one-third in towns,
The leaders of 4-H club work
see this change in residence of
club members as a challenge and
are meeting it head-on, Many
What 4-H Club
Means To Me
BY GWEN FISHER |
In my four years of 4-H club
work 1 have learned many things, -
This learning I know will help |
me the rest of my life. I really |
enjoy 4-H Club work; now it is
my favorite pastime.
In my years of working to
gether with people I learn more
and more. Some of this working
together encourages me to make
them my projects, Some of my
projects over the past four years
are: cornmeal muffins, clothing,
health, and now my second year
of food preservation and leader
ship,
When I first started in 4-H
my project was muffins, lentered
some muffins in a contest at
school and won second place,
Then there was my clothing
project. In this I learned to
use Mother’s sewing machine,
Also in this project I made a
scarf and an apron, I still have
these items and they mean a lot
to me,
Health was one of my projects
that 1 liked best. In this I
learned how often I should go to
the dentist, how often to see the
doctor, how to brush teeth cor
rectly, and many other important
facts, In this project I went to
District two years,
In just the past year I also
went to District in canning, I
was very pleased with my pro
gress because I placed sth out of
fifteen girls in our District, My
record book score was 36,5 and
my demonstration score was 53,
Os course, leadership was one
of my projects. In thepastyears
I have helped my Home Demon=
stration Agent in her garden, I
had lots of fun and learned much
from my past experiences. Also
1 have recently been taking square
dancing classes, lam now a
member of the Newton Squares,
I have learned very much from
4-H and I only wish that every=-
one knew how much fun4=H really
is.

4-H is a program in which4-H
Club members can attain high
achievements and great honors,
It can supply its members with
learning better ways of doing
things and even show their par
ents better ways of farming and
homemaking, In other words,
it might someday become a
career for some of us,
Because this organization is
designed in away that we may
experience many helpful things,
4-H has helped me acquire at
titudes and understanding to work
well with others, It can provide
away for me to meet some of
the opportunities it opens for
youth today, It can also develop
leadership talents and abilities
to help me become a better
citizen because it provides good
citizenship for all,
In our world today, we will
need all we can get in order that
we might be able to occupy some
of the better jobs, I think 4-H
can provide us with some of these
things, because it helps us con
tinue needed education,
What I Have Learned In 4-H
BY ANDY AARON
What I like about 4-H {is that
whatever you do you always have
a good time. In 4-H you learn
about many different things. You
always have plenty of help from
the county agent and the home de=~
monstration agent too.
I chose the projects I did be=
cause I wanted to tell some
safety rules with electricity and
things that would work off of
electricity. Electricity also
helps me in my Home Improve=-
ment, Home Furnishings and Art
project too.
While electricity is sometimes
dangerous there was a time when
County Agents
Column
projects are designed for the
rural non-farm and city club
member today, Some of these
might include the automotive pro=-
ject, landscaping, veterinary sc
ience, horse and pony project,
recreation, gardening, forestry,
wildlife, entomology and many
others, These members are
given manuals for guides intheir
project work and records tokeep
up with their progress. Many
of the projects which are suited
for the town 4-H’er are also
excellent for the rural non-farm
4-H’er,
The project work for the rural
boy and girl continues to in
clude many of the old production
project which have been carried
out by 4-H’ers for many years,
The challenge has been and is
being met here also. Many new
projects have been added for
rural 4-H’ers, They deal witha
variety of topics such as weed
control, testing programs for
beef and dairy animals, tractor
operators’ projects and seed pro
duction projects, These projects
place emphasis on the scientific
appraoch to farming for the
modern 4-H’er,
Many projects for all groups of
boys and girls have local, state,
and national sponsors with many
college scholarships beingavail=-
able for a job well done., It is
only fitting during National 4-H
Week that we call attention to
the fact that sponsors of the 4-H
program are a strong force in
assisting the 4-H boys and girls
to reach their goals.
Yes, from an early beginning
until the present time, the
challenge of working with these
young people hasbeen a greatone,
Through leaders, sponsors, help
from the 4~H’ers and their
parents, the 4-H’ers of today will
be an up-to-date club member,

we had no electricity at all. To
day people use electricity with a
flip of the switch and all because
of the man who invented it, Ben=~
jamin Franklin. These are afew
of the reasons why I like these
projects.
4-H has taught me that it is
easy to learn very worthwhile
things if a 4-H’er will only take
the time to work on it.

When I was old enough to be=
come a 4-H Club member, I was
very happy because my sister
and brother had been active in
4-H as members before me.
I chose Beef cattle as my pro=
ject because my daddy is inter
ested in cattle and he is able to
help me in many ways. Learning
to feed a calf properly requires
much training, time and interest.
I have learned to do this and also
to brush and lead my steer. The
only unpleasant thing about rais
ing a steer is having to sell him
at the end of the year.
In my 4-H Club work I have
made several interesting trips
such as Livestock judging and of
course to the Cattle Shows for
exhibiting my steers. The good
things I am learning on these
trips are helping me more and
more in everyday life.
I attended the 4-H Awards
Banquet and received medals in
Beef and Agriculture, plus the
certificates of merit that goes
with them. This makes the hard
work of doing your projects well
seem really worthwhile and I
surely hope I can always do a
good job in 4=H Club work.

After being a member of the
4-H Club for this first year, I've
learned a lot. I’ve learned that
any goal can be reached when you
really try hard to reach it.
I’ve learned that 4-H members
and leaders combine to form one
large, happy, and energetic fam
ily.
Althought this is my first year
in 4-H, I have managed to be
elected President of the Mans
field Junior 4-H Club and Parli
amentarian of the Newton County
Junior 4-H Council.
I've worked hard and long,
but none of my time has been
wasted because 4-H is the great
est opportunity a youth can have
and it’s right before you in your
own school.
4-H has been good to me my
first year. I hope I can be as
good to it in the following years
as it was to me in my Public
Speaking project this year.
1 also have Family Life and
Health as additional 4-H pro
jects and enjoy both of them
very much.

I’ve learned in 4-H and it has
been fun. It’s taught me to staad
up and speak upon my opinion,
give demonstrations and face
other people. 4~H work is good
training.
My interest in electricity has
become greater. You see, elec~
tricity has the power to help you
in life. For example, if you
are a mechanic, you would have
to connect and disconnect wires.
This summer I am going to
Rock Eagle twice. One time for
my circuit board. Then for the
fun of it. I know that it will be
fun.
I like my 4-H Club work be=
cause: 1. it teaches me what I
need to know; 2. It is fun; 3. It
provides opportunity; 4. It is
very educational; 5. It is alse
helpful.
I have been to Rock Eagle twice.
I had a lot of funthere. I gave my
demonstration first, and then
went again for fun. 4-H is the
best organization I know.

My name is Wayne Stinchcomb
and I am in the eighth grade at
school and an active member of
the 4-H Club at school. I joined
4-H when I was in the fifth grade
and have been in it since then. I
have enjoyed the 4-H Club very
much because 4-H means that
there is a place for everyone.
There is something in 4-H that
means what i{s in a person. It
makes them feel more confident
in themselves.
4-H is a club for everybody
and this club has meant a lot to
me and brought out a lot of
things for me. I have learned
to be more self-confident and
more realistic about my actions.
For instance, I have always loved
to ‘‘piddle-paddle’’ with electri=
city and working in my shop. It
can be very dangerous as I found
out when I got a big shock out of
it. My favorite projects are
Electricity and Home Improve=-
