Leadership is a project that
helps you become a better leader,
1 tried to become a better leader

Pr t assistant in 1963, Vice
t and President in
and in Girl Scouts I was
ribe, Reporter, Editor of
w newspaper, Secretary,
rer, and Patrol Leader,
" ed all the offices I held
and leadership helped me a lot,
1 also helped several girls
give demonstrations by helping
them choose a topic for their
demonstrations, Ihelped younger
4-H club members and my
younger brother in their pro=
ject work by helping them fill
out their record books.
1 helped several people enroll
in 4-H by discussing how much
fun you have in 4-H and telling
them how much you learn in
4-H Club work,
In Home Improvement, Home
Furnishings and Art, I made
several things such as a pencil
holder and trash can, 1 also
made book covers for my school
books.
My bulletin board came in
very handy. It gave me a place
to post my Girl Scout, school,
church and community notices,
I still enjoy using it,
For my mother, I made a
cross stitch apron which was
very attractive and she liked
it very much, The laundry bag
1 made was used to keep roll=
ers or socks in,
I set the table nearly every
afternoon, for it is loads of fun
to help your mother, and the
project, Family Life, helped me
in finding out more about my
family, My family enjoyed going
horseback riding, playing games,
hiking, trips, cook-outs, and
other outdoor activities,
1 will always try to ‘‘make

For many reasons 4-H Club
work has meant more to me
this year than at any previous
time, I feel that I have learned
80 much--and I have had such a
wonderful time while learning !
I was elected Secretary-
Treasurer of both the Newton
County High School and the Coun
cil 4-H Clubs, I have actually
enjoyed giving reports, reading
the minutes, and calling the rolls
for these clubs, 1 feel that
4-H has helped me overcome
one of my greatest problems=--
self-consciousness, (In fact, I
tried out and was one of the
nine selected for the One Act
Play at School; Newton County
placed second in the region!)
My project, Clothing, is my
favorite pastime, as I love to
sew, In September, I entered
four outfits in the Newton County
Fair, winning three first place
ribbons and one second place,
My Clothing project has not just
given me a good excuse for ob
taining more clothes, but, I feel,
has helped improve my tastealso,
I think I know the colors and
styles which suit me best now,
and I try continuely to utilize
this knowledge to my advantage,
My Clothing project has also
helped make me more consci
ously aware of quality inclothes,
I have come to realize that often
low=-quality garments have a low
price tag on them, Usually,
my first stop in a store is the

material counter, I have found
that 1 can have many more nice
garments by making them myself
than by buying them, My fam
ily, especially my thirteen year
old sister who has justdiscovered
clothes, really approves of my
project--they all like to receive
clothing as gifts!
My other 4-H projects includes
Foods and Nutrition, in which
Yeast Breads is my main inter=
est, In the summer or on week=
ends [ often plan and prepare
the meals using my knowledge
of the basic food groups and of
budgets which I have gained thr=
ough 4-H,
I have had fun in 4-H this
year, too, The District Rally
was held here in Newton County
in December and I again had
a chance to see friends I had
made at last Year’s District
Project Achievement meeting and
at Forestry Camp which I att
ended this summer, The High
School 4-H Club was in charge
of the concession stand and work=
ed very hard at the final basket
ball game of the season to raise

What can we actually say about
our 4-H experiences? Can we
just say it was fun? No, 4-H
is more than fun, It is the act
of learning while doing. You
can’t say, ‘“‘Well, I joined 4-H
to get out of school classes,’”’
You have to be a part of 4-H
to even say you’re a member,
To be a part of 4-H is to be
a part of life, You gain self
control and as ycu complete your
projects, you gain a pride about
you as if to say, “Now, 'm a
part of life, and I can do for
myself,”
I've learned, tnrough helping
my brothers on their poultry pro
jects and mine, that you can’t
let someone else do the work
for you. You need the initiative,
the will to finish what you’ve
started, to be a real 4-H’er,
I realized this through my 4-H
activities, but my realization
came a little bit too late. It
was in 1960 when I got my
dairy calf to share, for a while,
with my brothers as a project,
she had come along very well
until 1963, It was in the winter
when everything froze over, I
was keeping my calf at my Aunt’s,
My calf had grownand had her own
calf, but they both froze to death
because of my neglect, As I
mentioned before, I learned re=-
sponsibility late, but I learned
well,
1 didn’t let this one big failure
stop me. The next year I took
Dairy and Beef as my projects
again, I was entitled to go to
the District Livestock Judging
that year and I went, I learned
much that yearbytrail and error.
1 gained new pride in myself
in these contests. One of the most
importan things, to me, that I
learned, was that the size of an

animal doesn’t hold true always

is as regards judging sheep for
their meat productivity, He may
have too much fat.
Then came the 4-H Awards
Banquet, I was so proud to
be one of the award receivers,
The program that night was very
entertaining and educational. The
main speaker that night was a
senior from Rockdale County who
had toured Europe, He showed
colorful slides of his tour and
talked of his experiences there,
Now, this year, as I prepare
my records for District, I think
back over my past experiences
in 4-H., I can truly say that
4-H is an unforgettable exper=
ience,
