Served 5,612
Students In Sept.
The Newton County High School
Library received thirty new
books in September from varied
sources, and served 5,612 stud
ents.
2,105 books in the non-fiction
areas were checked out, while
1,124 fiction books were read
during the month, making a total
of 3,229 books.
The Library wishes to acknow
ledge with sincere appreciation,
the gift of three pictures from
the Covington Rotary Club which
will be placed in the reading
room.
The office of the County School
Superintendent has authorized the
construction of a new magazine
rack, plus the building of
additional shelving In the reading
room, which will cost ap
proximately one hundred and ten
dollars.
The largest number of students
using the library In a single day
was four hundred, on September
9, 1965. The largest number of
books checked out in a single
day was one hundred sixty-three
on September 22, 1965.

Speaker of the House of Repre
sentatives of the State of Georgia,
guest at Newton County High
School on Friday, October 1.
Telling us what America means
to him, he stressed the import
ance of young people’s taking
full advantage of the many op
portunities offered us, and of
our responsibilities as citizens
of the United states of America.
The students of Newton County
High School were indeed honored
to have such an Important figure
in our state to speak to them.

Livingston Plans
Halloween Carnival
A special meeting of the Liv
ingston P.T.A. was held Thurs
day night Sept. 30, to make plans
for the annual Livingston Hallo
ween Carnival.
P.T.A. President, Harold An
derson, presided over the meet
ing. Ray Brown, past P.T.A.
President, was elected Chairman
of the planning committee. Vol
unteer members have promised
to make this year’s carnival the
best and most enjoyable ever.
As in the past, Livingston’s
Halloween Queen and King will
be chosen, there will be many
games, plenty of food, and lots
of fun. Everyone is invited to
come and help support the school.
The Carnival will be on the night
of October 29.
While cotton will burn, it is
not highly flammable.

“School Citizen
Os Week" Here
Sheila Bates is a junior girl
who has brought much fame to
Newton County High School. In
her three years at Newton she
has been quite active in school
functions, and this year is a
member of the FHA, Gamma Tri-
Hi-Y, and Pep Club.
Recently she added to her hon
ors by placing as second runner
up Jackson Industrial Day Beauty
Contest. On Monday, September
27, Student Council elected Sheila
as School Citizen of the Week.
Congratulations Sheila on this
another honor.

News

even though we are French stud-,
ents, we don’t speak French at
our meetings, the first of which,
was called to order on Septem
ber 15, by our president, Buzzy
Spears, in Mrs. Henry Fitzpat
rick’s room. >
We had several business items
to discuss such as setting our
dues and getting an accurate,
roll of members. We chose.
Mary Lewis and Mac Hays to
represent us as beauties in the
school annual. Lanetta Yar
brough was appointed chaplin for„
the coming year.
We’ve already begun planning
programs for learning and rec
reation and we’re all set for a
really great year!
