this year, make sure you do a

Is below 12 percent. So if you
plan to combine when the mois

proper facilities before storing
the corn. Now is the time to
check your harvesting equipment
so get it out and take a look.
RYE FOR GRAZING
It won’t be too long until you
will be seeding rye for grazing
purposes. Let’s examine a few
of the finer points of producing
good grazing from rye. Make
sure you start with the correct
Know Your Newspaper Better
A Better Newspaper Every Issue!
That's our policy . . . and our constant endeavor. It's a large
order, and we don't always make it. But we try hard . . . and
many times we do make it—a better newspaper for you than
ever before.
How Do We Do It?
First, we plan the completes! possible reporting of the news of this area. To you, the news is
the most important thing in your paper . . . and therefore it has first place in our efforts. We
also plan for better pictures every issue . . . and more pictures when space permits. And we
look for interesting feature stories for each new issue. On the editorial page, we try to do a
continually better job.
Then... What Else Can We Do?
That's next in our planning. Can we make the paper more at
tractive to look at, and easier to read . . . better type . . . larger
type . . . different width columns? We can't change these things
every issue, of course, but still we are always thinking of new
ways to improve our product ... to produce a better newspaper
issue to issue . . . for better service to you, the reader.

variety of rye for this area.
Cood varieties for Newton County
are: Wrens Abruzzi; Explorer;
Weser and Elbon.
For grazing purposes you will
need to plant two to two and one
half bushels per acre. Make
sure the seed are clean and
treated.
Fertilization requirements for
your particular field should be
met. Generally, 400 to 600
pounds of 6-12-12 will be suff
icient. Use 5-10-15 if low pot
ash is a characteristic of your
soil.
You still have time to apply
lime, but you had better hurry
if you want It to do any good
this year. Don’t apply lime un
less your soil test so Indicates.
When top-dressing time gets here
plan to use around 80-100 pounds
of actual nitrogen per acre. For
heavy grazing use 100-130
pounds. Plan to have good grazing
on your place this year by planting
rye.
PREMATURE PECAN
DROPPING OF NUTS
If your pecan trees have been
having premature dropping of
nuts there are several things
that could cause this.
As for diseases an early scab
infestations of young nuts will
Thursday, October 7, 1965
cause them to drop. Leaf
diseases such as scab, scorch,
mildew, blotch, brown spot, and
downy or vein spot may cause nut
shedding.
The nut casebearer probably
causes more nut shedding than all
other insects collectively. You
may have trouble, though, from
the black aphids, May betties,
shuckworms, stink bugs, and
pecan weevils.
Nuts may drop early due to lack
of moisture and plant nutrients,
Including zinc.
The weather Injury could be
involved such as damage to leaves
and nuts from hail and wind.
