THE COVINGTON NEWS
went over the roster of the team
for the coming season and told the
civic club that “wehad three men
last year who hit over 30 home
runs, and six men who hit over
20 homers.” He continued,
"Other than power we have good
young pitchers to go with Tony
Cloninger and Ken Johnson ard
billy O’Dell. As you know Clon
inger won 24 games last year.”
"Manager Bragan has stated
that we will go more for the bunt
and run this next year and try to
win some of the close games by
defense. Pitching is defense,
too,” he stated.
Johnson praised the new radio-
TV setup which has Milo Hamil
ton and Larry Munson at the
mikes. Os course, Ernie will be
with this trio on both radio and
television. He stated that only
the out-of-town games would be
televised here.
On the lighter side he told of
his many experiences during his
eight years in the majors. He
was a member of the 1957 World
Championship Brave team that
defeated the New York Yankees
in the World Series.
Johnson said that he was a
"middle reliefer,” and that
meant he had to hold the op
position during the middle in
nings of a game. He quipped
"Actually, I took so many show
ers I was the cleanest pitcher
in the National League.”
He told one story about the
great Warren Spahn, who was
his teammate on the Milwaukee
team. "Spahn was so good on
his pick-off throw to first base
that it was unbelievable to see.
Once a rookie had reached first
on Spahn and he (Spahn) picked
off all three —- the player, first
baseman and umpire.” Then he
added, “Someone, commented
that the batter also struck at what
he thought was a pitch to the
catcher.”
