Miss Moina Michael of Athens
was the originator of the idea
of “The Poppy” as a memorial
to the war dead, and “The Poppy
Anchor” in memory of those
who lost their lives at sea. The
Poppy Anchor this year was made
with poppies contributed by Units
of the American Legion Auxili
ary, and designed and made by
Aubra Sherwood.
On May 30, National Memorial
Day, this same anchor, with the
cooperation of the US Naval Aca
demy at Annapolis, M ryland, and
accompanied by Mrs. L. W.
Smith, Department President and
Mrs. Ty C. Cason, Poppy Anchor
Chairman, will be launched at
sea from the deck of a Naval
A< ademy vessel. This event is
timed to coincide with the placing
of the memorial w reath on the
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
at Arlington Cemetery.
Mr. and Mrs. John Jay were
guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Jay and family and Mrs.
Will Jay in Madison. A birth
