Friday the Red Sox smashed

the Trojans 34-10. Steve Ste
wart had six hits; Larry Frix,
five; and Tray Polk, five all for
the Red Sox. Ricky Rooks had
three hits for the Trojans.
Saturday in a makeup game,
the Yankees dropped the Pirates
30-6. The Pirates donated many
runs through the aid of thirteen
errors.
Monday the Trojans de
molished the Pirates 28-5. Ricky
Rooks had five hits for the winn
ing Trojans and also pitched them
to victory.
Tuesday the Yankees pulled the
Minor League upset of the year,
defeating the Red Sox 5-1. David
Moyers was the winning pitcher
while John Tumlln collected two
hits. The previously undefeated
Red Sox managed only four hits
off the Yankees.

MAJOR LEAGUE
Wednesday the Cubs downed the
Rams in a thriller 11-9. Kim
Austin was the winning Cub pit
cher, striking out 11. Emory
Johnson had two hits and scored
three runs for the Cubs while
Bobby Burnett had four hits and
Zero McGiboney a home-run for
the Rams.
Thursday the Cubs beat the
Braves in another close game
7-4. Crlckett Rider was the
winning Cub pitcher. Bruce
Lynch hit a four-bagger while Jim
Anderson and Dan Pressley each
had four hits for the Cubs. Ricky
Funderburk hit a round-tripper
for the Braves.
Friday the Yankees broke open
a close game in the last inning
and downed the Cardinals 9-1.
Phil Gordon was th winning
Yankee pitcher. Tommy Hailey,
Vic Smith and Phil Gordon each
hit homers for the Yankees.
Saturday the Trojans downed
the Rams 7-3. Darrell Helmand
David McMullen each had three
hits for the Trojans. Bobby
Burnett had two safeties for the
Rams.
Monday the Trojans tied again,
this time with the Braves by the
score of 5-5. Darrell Helm had
three hits for the Trojans.
Tuesday the Rams edged the
Cardinals 2-1. Bobby Burnett
was the winning Ram pitcher.
Indian Creek
Tennis Tourney
Set June 20-26
Fowler’s Tennis Club In Cov
ington has announced that the
Indian Creek Junior Invitational
Tennis Tournament will be held
June 20-26.
It will be under the auspices
of the Southern Lawn Tennis
Association and sanctioned by
the U. S. Lawn Tennis Associa
tion.
Play will start at 9:00 a. m.
Monday, June 20, and every day
thereafter at the same time.
Boys’ 10 and under singles, 12
and under singles, 14 and under
singles will begin Monday. Boys’
16 and under singles, 18 and
under singles will begin Tues
day. Doubles will begin on Wed
nesday. Schedules will be post
ed each afternoon.
Prizes will be awarded to the
winner and runner-up in all
events. All matches will be two
out of three sets and will be
played on either laykold or clay
courts.
Entrance fees will be SI.OO for
singles and 75? for doubles in
all events, and must accompany
entry. Mail entries to: Louise
Fowler, Box 586, Covington,
Georgia or phone 786-2532.
All entries close Saturday,
June 18, at 12:00 o’clock noon.
Referees will be furnished for
all semi-final and final matches,
and as many other matches as
possible. Miss Annie Laurie
Turner will be In charge of the
referees.
A cook-out has been planned
for Thursday night, June 23, at
the club.

probably these teams will be
playing each other in the cham
pionship again this year.
Other Newton County players
who will take the field for the
Allstars will be Terry Rutledge,
Larry Parnell, Steve Norman^
and Charles Picket. Game time
will be 1:30 P.M.
to try for one of the limited 30
starting spots.
The present qualifying record
was set last year by veteran
A. J. Foyt of Houston, Texas at
166.512 miles per hour. Ex
perts are predicting a qualifying
run of more than 170 will be
needed for the pole position.
The 1 1/2 mile Atlanta course
will open for Inspection and prac
tice on Thursday, June 23 with
qualifying runs slated for Fri
day and Saturday, June 24 and 25,
with the fastest 30 machines
taking the starter’s green flag
at 1 p. m.
