Tribute To Miss
“It Is my privilege today to
pay tribute to one who has ser
ved this church long and well.
Her parents, themselves loyal
members of Hopewell, believed In
the admonition “Train up a child
In the way he should go and when
he Is old he will not depart
from It” and so at an early age
the habit of regular church at
tendance was firmly established.
In due time she became a mem
ber of the church and through
the years has been a loyal sup
porter of every phase of the work
CARD OF THANKS
It Is not possible to express
In mere words the deep apprec
iation we feel toward you, our
friends, who have remembered
us so beautifully during the mon
ths of Illness and anxiety and
then at the death of our loved
one. Each word, thoughtful act
of kindness, and prayers have
helped us to accept our loss.
We shall always be grateful for
your friendship and love.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Agnes Hawk

ing all of you for the many kind
nesses shown to me during my
illness. Many thanks to my doc
tor, hospital staff, friends and
relatives for their services, vis
its, trays, flowers, gifts, cards,
letters, phone calls, love, pray

I hope I can remember to be
as thoughtful to others in the
future.
Sincerely,
Mrs. A. M. Butler

Bell Gardener
- through her attendance, her
teaching in the church school,
her work with the women of the
church, and with her tithes and
offerings. Many of the projects
for Improvements of the grounds
or church property have been In
itiated by her -- all have been
supported by her. Even when
her work necessitated her ab
sence from Hopewell, her in
fluence was felt through her gene
rous financial support while her
enthusiasm for active participa
tion was transferred to the
churches in the communities
where she lived.
Truly by precept and example
her life has been an inspiration
to her family, to this church,
and to this community. There
fore, I think It Is fitting that
on this the eve of Miss Bell
Gardner’s ninetieth birthday we
pause to pay tribute to her for
the significant contribution she
has made to this church.
And so, Aunt Bell, your nieces
and nephews through three gene
rations have furnished the room
at the right of the entrance to
this sanctuary as a church Lib
rary in token of our love and de
votion to you and in recognition
of what you have done for us
here.
Knowing your zest for know
ledge and your love for this
church-whlch we also share eit
her because of our own member
ship here or because of the con
nection our parents have had with
it-we have attempted to provide
a place where members may find
Christian literature which will
stimulate their thinking and lead
to a more diligent study of God’s
word. You will find in the lib
rary three volumes which we
hope will form the nucleus of a
rapidly growing collection.
To you, Mr. Avery, we present
this key with the hope that, as
(Our Advertisers Are Assured of Best Results)
Aunt Bell’s life has been a bene
diction to us, so may the lives
of the members of this church
for years to come be enriched
by the use of this Library.”
This beautiful tribute was given
by Miss Mary B. Thompson, a
niece of Miss Bell Gardner, Im
mediately following the morning
worship service at the Hopewell
Associate Reformed Presby
terian Church on Sunday, May 22,
1966.
Mr. Avery, In accepting the
keys, congratulated “Miss Bell”
for her long and useful years of
service. She , in a few well
chosen words, accepted this tri
bute and expression of love with
thanks and appreciation, and a
desire to be able to serve for
many more years and in a great
er capacity.
After the Dedicatory Prayer
and Benediction, Miss Thompson
escorted Miss Gardner to the
library where her relatives and
friends came in to congratulate
her and to see the lovely room
redecorated and furnished in her
honor.
A plaque on the wall states, “A
Tribute to Miss Bell Gardner by
her Nieces and Nephews”. On
an antique table refinished in
the natural were the lovely lib
rary books presented to the lib
rary In her honor by her great
nieces and nephews and her great,
great nephews. This table served
as the Sacrament Table in the
church for many years.
Many of “Aunt Bell’s” nieces
and nephews were present to en
joy this happy occasion with her,
all of which came as a complete
surprise to her. A basket lunch
was enjoyed by the family at the
noon hour.
