A t LaGrange College
LaGRANGE, GA.—One in ten
students at LaGrange College
during the spring quarter earned
academic honors.
Dr. C. Lee Harwell, academic
dean, named 52 students to the
quarterly Dean’s List. Spring
quarter enrollment was 509.
The dean’s academic honors
list Includes all students taking
12 or more quarter hours of
work who have earned grades
averaging at least 3.5 quality
points per hour of work.
Twelve graduating seniors are
Included on the Dean’s List. Ot
hers listed by Dean Harwell as
having complied outstanding
academic records include Dana
Sue Kemp of Covington. She Is
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
John Aaron Kemp of Route 2,
Covington.
Mrs. Basham Is
Named To Dean's
List At U. Ga.
Mrs. Sandra Basham, the for
mer Sandra Richardson of Cov
ington, was among those at the
University of Georgia, Athens,
making the Dean’s List for the
spring quarter. Mrs. Basham,
who resides at 1137 Milledgeville
Ave., Apt. 5, Athens, will do her
student teaching at Athens High
School this fall.
Jaycettes Enjoyed
State Convention
The Newton County Jaycettes
traveled to Jekyll Island on
Thursday, May 26, for the 1966
Convention. Registration and
receiving of ’ pamphlets for the
schedule of the convention was
first on the program.
Thursday evening the Bruns
wick Jaycettes were hostess for
a barbeque cookout with a get
acqualnted party held later In
the evening in the Aquarama with
Buddy Davis Orchestra, Patrick,
and the Hullabaloo Dancers en
tertaining the group.
Friday afternoon a business
meeting was held at the Carri
age Inn. Mrs. Nancy Culpepper,
1965-66 State Georgia Jaycette
President, presided. Mrs. Shir
ley Brownlee gave an Inspiring
devotional assisted by Nancy Zell
of Brunswick Jaycettes.
Friday evening a seafood plat
ter was served at the Aquarama
with Don Grime’s Orchestra and
the Four Freshmen entertaining.
After the election of officers on
Saturday morning an awards
luncheon was held at Gould Au
ditorium. Saturday evening the
Presidential Installation Banquet
was held In the Aquarama follow
ed with the Presidential Inau
gural Ball with Jimmy Farr’s
Orchestra.
Jaycettes attending from New
ton County were: Mrs. Jack C.
Harwell, Mrs. William Womack,
Mrs. Michael Witherspoon, Mrs.
Jerome Jones, Mrs. Frank Mal
colm and Mrs. Paul Ketchum.
Tuesday, June 7, the Newton
County Jaycettes Installed the
new officers for the year 1966-67.

day morning, June 20, at 10 a.m.
in the Christian Fellowship Room
of the church.
Mrs. Marvin Sneed, District
President of the Women’s So
ciety, Atlanta, Decatur, Oxford
District, will conduct the in
stallation service of the new
officers for 1966-67.
A luncheon will be served In
the fellowship hall following the
meeting. Miss Lucy Banks is in
charge of the program and lunch
eon.

Legion Auxiliary Hears Reports

The American Legion Auxil
iary Unit 32 held their regular
meeting Monday evening, June
12, at the American Legion Home.
Mrs. Hugh Sams, Unit President,
opened the meeting in the regular
form. The Pledge to the Flag
and Preamble to the Constitution
was repeated In unison after
which Mrs. T. W. Binford, Unit
Chaplain, led in prayer.
Reports from officers and
committee chairmen were given.
Mrs. A. R. Hooten, chairman
of the nominating committee,
presented the following officers
for the year, 1966-67: Pres
ident, Mrs. Hugh Sams; First
vice-president, Mrs. Don Wood;
Second vice-president, Mrs. Dan
Clower; secretary, Mrs. Lewis
White; corresponding secretary,
Mrs. A. R. Hooten; treasurer,
Mrs. C. T. Bohanan; historian,
Mrs. Ty Cason; Sgt. at Arms,
Mrs. Richard Lord and Mrs.
Bennelle Myers, Chaplain. These
were unanimously elected.

To Attend Kiwanis
Nat. Convention
Mr. and Mrs. James Hutchins
of Covington, representing the
Kiwanis Club of Covington, will
attend the Fifty-first Annual Con
vention of Kiwanis International
In Portland, Oregon, July 1-5.
The convention, first to be held
In the Oregon metropolis since
1920, will be built around Kiw
anis’ entry into its second half
century of community service,
and the rapid spread of the or
ganization Into other lands.
Fifteen to sixteen thousand
people, Kiwanlans and their fam
ilies, will attend. They will
represent more than 275,000
Kiwanlans In 5,400 clubs In the
United States, Canada, Mexico,
the Caribbean, Western Europe,
and the Far East. Convention
sessions will be held in Port
land’s New Memorial Coliseum.
Work to be accomplished at the
convention Includes the election
of officers for 1966-67 ... a
president, president-elect, two
vice-presidents, a treasurer, and
six trustees; recognition of the
clubs and districts throughout
the organization adjudged tops
in community service work and
overall excellence; and the adop
tion of resolutions upon which
the organization’s 1966-67 com
munity service program will be
based.
Much of the convention bus
iness will be conducted during
six general convention sessions
in Portland’s Memorial Coli
seum. Afternoon round table
conferences and panel discuss
ions will be held in various
hotels throughout Portland.
The convention will feature
a dramatic opening In pageant
form; a colorful “Presentation
of the Flags of Kiwanis Nations;”
a two- hour professional show
starring Marguerite Piazza,
prlma diva of the operatic, con
cert, nightclub and TV stage,
the comedy team of Rowan and
Martin, and other personalities;
a special program for the lad
les; a program for the young
sters present; and a score of
district banquets held through
out the Portland area.
Music and color will be pro
vided by many Kiwanis-spon
sored musical groups, and by
professional singers, instrumen
talists, and performers.
