so shine that He may touch the
lives of all with whom you come
in contact.
Another thing, we have learned
is. . .that it’s just as easy to
smile as it is to frown. . .and
there is a disadvantage when
you frown, for you keep those
frown wrinkles after a while. . .
and people think . . . “There
goes an old grouch!” So let’s
make smile wrinkles. It is just
as easy to be courteous, kind
and happy. . .or at least smil
ing through your sorrows. . .
heartaches. . .disappointments
in life. . .we all have them!
So hows about a great big smile
no matter how tough the going
is for you. . . It’s a sure cure
for what “ails you.”
A smiling Christian is what
Christ wants. . .He surely does
not want long faced, whining Ch
ristians trying to win others for
Him. Try we must.. .by giving
ourselves to our friends. . .not
exclusively, . .for there are many
others longing for a smile, hand
shake, or just a cherry “Good
Morning!” There are lonely
patients in the hospitals who may
or may not get well. . .they are
in pain. . .OH what a smile
from someone who goes in and
says: “I just came by and
brought you some flowers from
my garden”. . .We took some
to a friend in the hospital this
week, and said they were not
very pretty but thought they might
mean something to her. “Oh,
they will,” she said, “but you
mean more than all the flowers”.
So you see, you never know how
much you are needed.. .and Thank
the Heavenly Father that we can
just feel NEEDED! Everybody
needs to be needed!
Well Sir! You know what?
Col. Tuck. . .feeling so spry
as he stepped along with his
grocery shopping cart. . .that
he got tangled up in it. . .and
fell right on the pavement. We
called out there the first thing.
He -answered and said: “I’m al
right but I’ve really got a black
eye.” He went down on his
face so he said. . .but I do won
der just how he got that black
eye? Seriously, he was bruised
up. . .but he kept wanting to go
home. . .they took him straight
to the hospital. . .so they did
let him go. . .he will be out
walking again as soon as the sun
rises again, that we know. We
are sorry this had to happen to
anybody. . .but especially to the
Col. whom everybody in town,
big, little and old loves de
votedly. Hurry out again we all
miss you.
Mrs. Pritchett is riding around
in her chair now, and sitting in
the sunshine on the patio. . .sc
is Mrs. Stinchcomb! We are so
happy they can get around a little
in a wheel chair now. Mr.
Jessie Farrow was smiling on
Monday morning when we arrived
. . .and his condition has im
proved. We are wishing for each
one in the hospital a speedy re
covery.
We write this on Monday as we
may just not have time to write
for the rest of the week. . .so
this will all be old news. Happy
Birthday Miss Pearl Burney on
tomorrow, June 14th. . .Today as
you read this, June 16th, would
have been our 37th Wedding An
niversary! We all have happy
memories of days gone by, . .
but we cherish the days to come.
Nothing can make any one of us
happier than being able to serve
our fellow man. . .When? Why
when they are lonely, blue, dis
couraged, troubled, ill, or have
lost a loved one! In giving of
ourselves, we not only bring
happiness to others (even tho’
you feel you do not have much
to give) It is the giving. . .not
the receiving. . .that makes each

Named To Dean s
List At Georgia

you only two years.”
After awarding certificates of
graduation to the students, the
Oxford Dean made some obser
vations about the vital relation
of education and the church.
In presenting the candidates
for their certificates, the regis
trar said, “Amongthese students
are several who have made good
academic records Including
Honor List (comparable to Phi
Beta Kappa in a four year pro
gram) and Merit List (compar
able to Dean’s List on many
campuses).”
Dr. Tarkenton also announced
that two Oxford College students
who graduated at Emory Univer
sity on June 13 had earned Phi
Beta Kappa. They are Kenneth
McAllister of Newton County and
Sara Padgett of Atlanta.
Mr. McAllister, whose father
is associated with the FF A camp,
will enter the Emory University
School of Medicine in Septem
ber. Miss Padgett, whose father
is Minister of the St. James
Methodist Church in Atlanta, is
teaching school in Dalton.
One outstanding feature of the
commencement was the fiftieth
reunion anniversary of the class
of 1916 under the chairmanship
of Mr. Charles Candler of
Madison.
Under the leadership of Mr.
W. A. Carlton, a marker was
placed in front of a tree which
had been planted in memory of
Bob Hammond and Billy Mitchell,
who together had contributed 95
years of custodial service to the
college.
In the Baccalaureate Sermon
Dr. Nat G. Long, District Super
intendent of the Atlanta-Decatur-
Oxford District, spoke to the
students on: “Set Your Minds
on Things Above.” He said,
“What we set our minds to we
set our hands to and what we set
our minds to we set our whole
life to.” He then urged the grad
uates to “Give your minds to
the highest in Christ Jesus.”
In the Baccalaureate and Com
mencement services Rev. and
Mrs. G. Robert Gary sang a
duet, Mr. John Austin was at
the organ, and the Oxford Col
lege Brass Ensemble rendered
special Instrumental music.
In a surprise announcement,
Dr. R. Carl Chandler, President
of the Emory University Alumni
Association, presented Dean
Eady with a honor award citation
in view of his long membership
in the Association and his honor
ed service to Oxford College and
Emory University. This an
nouncement had been kept secret
until Sunday afternoon’s public
announcement. It was just
another of a long list of award
acknowledgements which have
come to Dean Eady.
Pilot Club
Picnic Tonight
The Pilot Club of Covington
will have its annual picnic at
the Girl Scout Hut on Thurs
day, June 16 at 7:30 P. M.
Mrs. Dan Weigel, chairman of
the Finance Committee and her
committee members are making
plans for the evening.
The chairs we sit in, the auto
mobiles we drive, the telephone
consoles we dial—all must be
designed today for mass pro
duction. At Georgia Tech there
is one of the nation’s few pro
grams training men and women
to be industrial designers.
