Newton Had 22 4-H Winners At
Rock Eagle Achievement Meetings
The green and white clover
of the 4-H Club will be very
piuch in evidence throughout
Newton County this week as
1,400 boys and girls participate
in the observance of Nationa’
4-H Week.
Newton County’s members are
joining with more than 158,000
Georgians and approximately two
and a quarter million others
throughout the nation in cele
brating the week.
4-H competition was very keen
this year with county eliminations
being held to select representa
tives for the District 4-H Achie
vement Meetings at Rock Eagle
4-H Club Center. Newton County
had six-first place winners,
three-second place winners and
thlrteen-third place winners at
these District competitions. One
Senior 4-H girl, Sandl Ison, went
on to the State 4-H Congress for
further competition, representing
our Northwest District in the
Fruit and Vegetable Production
project, where she placed fourth.
Arthur Hargrove, Senior 4-H’er,
also attended the State 4-H Club
Congress where he was awarded
a $500.00 Atlanta Journal Schol
arship for outstanding 4-H Club
achievements. Art was also
awarded a Camp Counselor work
scholarship at Rock Eagle 4-H

Club Center where he spent the
summer counseling the 4-H
camping groups.
District first place winners
included Margaret Adams, En
tomology; Ben Marks, Tractor;
Mark Hitchcock, Dairy; Henry
Stowe, Livestock-Horse; and
Doug Hargrove, Dog Care &
Training.
There were many 4-H acti
vities and events during the year.
Some of these were: State 4-H
Council; State Wildlife Camp;
State Forestry Camp; District
4-H Rally; District and State
4-H Horse Shows; District Live
stock Judging; , District Land
Judging; 4-H Club Day at the
Southeastern Fair; and many
more.
Newton County 4-H’er, Arthur
Hargrove, was named Georgia’s
first National Winner in the Dog
Care and Training Project and
represented the entire State of
Georgia at the National 4-H Club
Congress held in Chicago. He
also appeared on the 11th birth
day anniversary program of the
4-H HOUR, television show,
WAGA-TV.
Marshall Ginn rode in the
District Horse Show in Mc-
Donough and qualified to ride
in the State 4-H Horse Show
competition held in Athens this
week. 4-H’ers camped at Camp
Chatham, Savannah Beach, this
year for their regular summer
camping program with additional
4-H’ers attending Dublin 4-H
Center.
State Highway To
Beautify More
Georgia Roads
The State Highway Department
has signed a three-year contract
with the University of Georgia
Departments of Horticulture and
Landscape Architecture for re
search of plants suitable for
roadside beautification, with the
U. S. Bureau of Public Roads
paying approximately 70% of the
cost from Highway Planning and
Research funds.
Experiments will be performed
at actual road locations, with
planting and maintenance done by
the Highway Department under
the direction of the University.
The research will be used to
develop a master list of plants
most suitable for roadside plant
ing in accordance with soil con
ditions and the various natural
environments over the state.

ried out in propagation of several

Firm Fined For
False Labeling
A Guthrie, Ky., seed dealer
was fined $250 and costs re
cently for violating the Federal
Seed Act by falsely labeling seed
shipped In interstate commerce,
according to the U. S. Depart
ment of Agriculture’s Consumer
and Marketing Service.
The Consumer and Marketing
Service, in cooperation with of
ficials of the Georgia Department
of Agriculture, took action
against Bert Covington, doing
business as Covington Grain and
Seed Company, for shipping seven
bags of mislabeled tall fescue
from Guthrie, Ky., to Madison,

Ga. Judgment was entered Au
gust 18 in the U. S. District
Court for the western district
of Kentucky.
Labels on the bags indicated
that the seed contained no
noxious-weed seeds, but the seed
was found to contain the noxious
weed seed cheat or chass at a
rate of 315 per pound. The
Federal Seed Act requires that
agricultural seed be labeled to
show the name and rate of oc
currence of noxious weed seeds,
in accordance with the law of the
state into which the seed is
shipped.
The Federal Seed Act, ad
ministered by the Consumer and
Marketing Service, is a federal
truth-in-labeling law designed to
protect farmers and other con
sumers In the purchase of seeds.
