SILAGE PRESERVATIVES
There are two general types
of silage preservatives for use
here In Newton County. The two
types are chemicals and feed
additives.
You should use chemical add
itives with high moisture green
chopped forages. Be careful
so as not to apply too much.
Excessive amounts will decrease
palatabllity.
Feed additives with the ex
ception of molasses will reduce
the moisture content, increase
the available carbohydrate ma
terial for desirable bacteria to
thirve on, increase the feed value
of the crop, and reduce seepage.
What should you consider when
deciding on which preservative to
use?

COVER CROPS FOR
PECAN GROVES
If you ae planning to establish
.a cover crop for your pecan
grove, now is the time to get
busy.
For grazing in the groves you
may use a legume such as crim
son clover, vetch, and sweet
lupine. Also, oats and rye may
be used for grazing, but rye is
preferred.
Blue lupine may also be used
for a cover crop. It will not
make good grazing, but it will
provide cover for the ground.
You may want to make a per
manent pasture of the area around
your pecan trees. If so, winter
crops suitable are vetch, winter
peas, sweet lupine, Oats, or rye.
Coastal bermuda, Bahiagrass, or
.some other type of millet maybe
used for summer pasture.
Remember, If you are going
to establish grazing or a cover
crop for this winter in your pe
can grove, you need to get start
ed before pecan harvest time gets
here.
Farmers Urged
To Lime Now
For Soybeans
The 1967 soybean harvest is
more than a year away, but now
is the time to get ready for it,
according to J. R. Johnson, head
of the Cooperative Extension Ser
vice agronomy department, Un
iversity of Georgia.
Mr. Johnson pointed out that
soybeans require well-limed
soil, and he added that now is the
time to take a soil test and meet
lime needs. He said this is
especially important on land
where small grains are being
planted now to be followed by
soybeans next spring. “A far
mer won’t have time to do this
job between small grain harvest
and soybean planting,” he ex
plained.
In addition , liming now will
help this year’s small grain crop.
The lime, according to Mr. John
son, corrects soil acidity and
promotes bacterial activity in
the soil. As far as soybeans
are concerned, this bacterial ac
tivity is necessary for the plants
to fix their own nitrogen supply
from the air.
The Extension agronomist
pointed out that soybeans are
becoming increasingly important
in Georgia. Acreage, yield, and
value of the crop have gone up
every year during the 1960’5.
Last year the state produced 3,
444,000 bushels valued at $7,
360,000. The State Crop Re
porting Service says production
this year will climb to 4,342,000
bushels, with a corresponding in
crease in income.
Still, Georgia will have a soy
bean deficit of around 21 mil
lion bushels. The state annually
uses about 25 million bushels for
poultry and livestock feed.
For this reason, Mr. Johnson
says the soybean outlook in the
state is good. However, he re
minded farmers that high, pro
fitable yields are possible only on
soil where the lime requirements
have been met.

tation in all employment areas
for the handicapped.
In proclaiming this week as
Georgia Employ the Handicapped
Week, the Governor stated, “Our
handicapped citizens have the
desire to make their own way
and to be full partners in the
affairs of the communities in
which they reside. The handi
capped have proven that they can
produce, that they can work saf
ely, and that their job attendance
record is equivalent to that of
the able-bodied. The world sit
uation requires that America
make full use of its manpower
resources, and it is consistent
with the democratic tradition to
enable the handicapped to help
themselves.
“Our society has blossomed
because it offers to all the hope
of achieving the fullness of life.
We cannot afford to isolate the
handicapped from this high pur
pose, or stifle the fulfillment of
their legitimate desires. Let us
not Ignore, in our search for
skilled and able workers, the
demonstrated abilities of the
handicapped, however severe
their disabilities. Let us not
throw up thoughtless barriers
which prevent them from con
tributing their share to society.
“I also call upon the Mayors
of municipalities, other public
officials, leaders of business,
industry, labor, civic, veterans,
professional, and other organ
izations to take part in this ob
servance. I further urge all
employers to consider the handi
capped for employment, retention
of their jobs or promotion so
long as such employment, reten
tion or promotion is consistent
with the capacities of the handi
capped.
“I also urge that all citizens
remember throughout the year,
that by their Interest and assis
tance the handicapped can
achieve economic independence
and thus will be able to par
ticipate in the total life of their
communities.”
Governor Sanders cited Dr.
A. P. Jarrell, Assistant State
Superintendent of Schools in
Charge of Vocational Rehabili
tation Services, and Commis
sioner of Labor, Ben T. Huiet,
for their efforts in rehabilitation
and securing employment for this
important segment of our state’s
population.
