CARE FOR YOUR IRON
Care of a steam iron is very
Important. Be sure to use dis
tilled water if the instructions
call for it. You buy it at the
drug store. Do not use rain
water, defrost water or distilled
water bought at a filling station.
There is on the market, however,
a filter which can be used with
most irons. Follow the Instruc

use. Also follow Instructions with
the iron for emptying or not
emptying the water after using
the iron.
When steam openings are clog
ged, the iron may spit or not
steam at all. There are several
procedures which may be used
to clear them. Commercially
prepared cleaners are available
at grocery, drug, department and
appliance stores. Instructions
for using should be followed ex
actly.
Pure apple cider vinegar or a
mixture of vinegar and distilled
or filtered water (about half and
half) may be used in the same way
the commercially prepared
cleaner is used. This method
is to let the cleaner drip through
the cold iron. Vinegar and water
solution may be used in a hot iron,
following these steps:
1. Fill the iron with the solut
ion and set on “steam”. Let
heat.
2. Hold the iron over the sink,
old towel or newspaper and let
it steam until the holes clear.
There may be a sudden spurt of
clogging material when this hap
pens.
3. After the steam vents are
open and the water has steamed
out, pour in clear water (dis
tilled or filtered) and let it steam
through. It is very important
that all vinegar be removed or it
may show up later as a black

4. After the iron is clear
and clean, set the control on
“cotton” or “linen” and let it
heat for about 20-30 minutes
to eliminate vinegar odor.
Scratches on the soleplate
should be ignored unless they
are deep enough to feel; then they
can be sanded down with fine
steel wool. Starch can be re
moved by heating the iron slightly
and rubbing with a damp cloth
which has been dipped in baking
soda. For an extra smooth sur
face, particularly after any sole
plate treatment, run the warm
iron over wax paper.
