Oxford College Soccer Team
Prepares For Hard Schedule
Oxford College opens its 1966
soccer season against Emory
University in Atlanta on October
12. Soccer Coach Vaughn Chr
istian feels it is truly going to
be an exciting year for the team.
During practice the team has
displayed much enthusiasm and
desire.
Coach Christian will be de
pending heavily on the freshmen
to supply the needed depth nec
essary to take some of the pres
sure off the battle-proven sop
homores.
When asked to pinpoint the
play of an individual player,
Coach Christian felt the play of
wing halfbacks Rod Heller and
Dick Noblet had been most pleas
ing.
Looking ahead to the schedule,
Oxford s first home schedule will
be Saturday October 22, against
Covenant College of Chattanooga,
Tenn. However, Oxford College
will play the Atlanta Soccer Club
in a practice game tnis coming
Saturday at 3:00 p.m. on the
Oxford athletic field. The public
is invited to attend the game.
For those people not aware
of the growth of soccer in the
U. S., Atlanta will have a pro
fessional team next year to com

in America. Soccer is destined
to become a major sport in the
U. S. Soccer is watched by

Newton County Rams leveled their 1966 season record at 3-3
in Hartwell Friday night as Coach Milton McLaney’s team downed
the home outfit 19-0. The other two NCHS victories have been
scored over Rockdale County (14-0) and Franklin County (21-7).
George Bailey’s 71-yard gal
lop for a third-period TD broke
the game open for the Rams.
Leading 6-0 at the time, Bailey’s
jaunt brought the score up to 13-0
after Lee Piper added the PAT.
However, Piper missed his first
PAT in the first period when
the ball sailed to the right of the
goal post.
One of the bright spots of the
defense in the game was the sen
sational play of junior Billy Wil
liams. He intercepted QB David
Luthi’s first pass of the game in
the Initial minute of the game.
Williams lugged the ball from the
Hart 44 to the 34 where the Rams
went to work for their first TD
of the night.
Williams was the last man to
get Mike Leard, Hart speedster,
in the third period when the enemy
runner was apparently on his way

nation’s leading scorer with 30
points, had scoring jaunts of 6 and

Tech team total in rushing and
his successful 22-yard throw to
end Steve Almond was the Jackets
longest pass completion of the
afternoon.
Snow wasn’t the only Georgia
Tech hero of the day. Center Jim

Richard Bell to remark that “I
wish every football coach and
writer in the country could see
this film. There can’t be a bet

than Breland.”
And defensive Coach Bud Car
son, although disappointed that
his charges had given up their
first touchdowns of the 1966 sea
son, had some exploits to talk
about, too. Linebacker W. J.
Blane was credited with 17 tack

with 14 and Wrecker Back David

There will be no rest for the
undefeated Yellow Jackets this

a sellout for months and could
very well be one of the great
games of the 1966 season.
ATLANTA— Bunky Henry, who
is also one of the nation’s finest
amateur golfers, set anew Geor

and 1965 football seasons when
he kicked 22 consecutive extra

with 42 points, all by kicking.

play of the game Billy collabora
ted with Steve Piper to stop a Hart
County plunge from the NCHS
one-yard stripe. This prevented
a Bulldog touchdown and preser
ved the shutout for the NCHS
eleven.
Other than George Bailey’s
scintillating offensive game,
Fullback Steve Piper scored once
and Bailey himself added the
other TD from the one-yard
stripe.
The Rams stuck to the ground
for their offense during the even
ing. They ran up a total of 277
yards via the land attack. Newton
threw the ball twice without
a completion.
The Newton coaches are ex
pecting one of the hardest games
of the season in Covington Fri
day night when the Winder-
Falcons Take
On Redskins
Still looking for a victory, the
Atlanta Falcons travel to
Washington Sunday to meet the
Redskins, now 2-2 under new
head coach Otto Graham.
Last Sunday the young Fal
cons took their worst drubbing
of the season, a 47-14 whopper
from the Dallas Cowboys after
having led 7-3 at the end of the
first quarter. Atlanta gave up
the ball three times on fumbles
and twice on interceptions.
“This has been our biggest
problem”, says Coach Norb Hec
ker. “We’re actually beating
ourselves with mental mistakes.
Offensive line blocking and the
running game have been better
than I thought they would be
in the early season, but the pass
ing hasn’t.”
Although the air game wasn’t
all Hecker had hoped for against
Dallas, three Falcon quarter
backs combined for 16 comple
tions in 27 attempts and Atlanta
collected 20 first downs to the
Cowboys’ 22—one of the statis
tical stories which proved the
mental miscues were keys to the
loss.
Again halfback Junior Coffey
was the leading rusher for At
lanta and the game with 60 yards
in 14 carries and one touchdown.
The big blow to the Falcons
was the loss of receiver Angelo
Coia, who severely sprained his
right knee and will have it in a
cast for at least two weeks.
He will be out indefinitely and
will be replaced by Gary Barnes.
Halfback Charley Scales, who
has been nursing a bad ankle,
is expected to be sound for the
Redskin game.
