All 3 Favorites Won Again
An extreme oddity took place over the weekend in college and
high school football for Newton County fans. All three local favor
ites—Newton High, Georgia and Georgia Tech—all won their games.
This marked die second week in a row that this happened. Friday
night the Rams downed the Hart County team 19-0, and Saturday
Tech turned back Clemson 13-12 and Georgia beat South Carolina
at Columbia 7-0. . .Future Ram opponents’ scores Friday night
were: Winder-Barrow 21, Stephens County 0; Gainesville 45, Elbert
County 7; South Hall 37, East Hall 0.

Ram Quarterback George Bailey put on quite a show before his
grandparents at Hartwell Friday night. He lugged the ball 14 times
for a total of 124 yards, and that’s almost a 9-yard average per
try. Bailey's father (George) is a native of Hart County ... Ray
Tomlin, a former baseball hurler in the Middle Georgia League,
was the winner of Southern Discount’s two free tickets to a future
Atlanta Falcon home game.

Listed among the statistical leaders in Region BAA football are
Steve Piper, with a 5.3 yard average per rush; Alvin Whisnante
with a 33.5 yard per punt average; and George Bailey with 6 punt

Ram boys basketball Coach Ronald Bradley is in quite a demand as
a civic club speaker. On September 26 he spoke to the Mansfield
Lions Club, on Nov. 10 he will speak to the Covington Kiwanis Club
and on Nov. 11 he will address a civic group in Jackson. . .George
Bailey had a total of 124 yards on 14 offensive plays Friday night at
Hartwell. This was one of Bailey’s better games in the past two
seasons.
Francis Tarkenton, the Viking QB and former University of Geor

a 500-meter kayaking title in Indiana. . .The Rams 19-0 win at
Hartwell Friday was the first NCHS victory at Hartwell since 1955
when Willie Moore ran 88 yards for a 7-0 victory.
The Atlanta Braves finished in fifth place again, and that was
about the spot the experts said they would occupy, notwithstanding
the Atlanta writers and one national magazine. Under Manager
Billy Hitchcock the Braves won 33 out of 49 games. . .How futile
can you get? From the top to the bottom in two years is the case of
the New York Yankees. In 1964 they won the American League
pennant and this season they finished dead last.

TANGLING WITH TROUT
While bass fishermen reported
ly outnumber anglers who seek
trout, the cold water products of
mountain streams and lakes are
a main reason for the annual
summer mirgration to northern
areas.
And, say the fishing experts at
Mercury outboards, this is the
time of year to lay plans for the
season's outings and to learn
something about the fish that al
most always plays an important
role in a northern or western
vacation.
In general, most families will
find either cutthroats, browns,
rainbows or brook trout tilling
their creels.
These trout follow similar pat
terns in their habits and are
accessible to everyone in the
family. They frequent undercut
banks, root tangles, shaded pools
and feed on rocky bottoms that
harbor aquatic insects. Trout
less than one-half pound pre
fer tlies, worms, small minnows
and small crustaceans while
larger fish add crayfish, mollusks,
frogs and small fish to their diet.
Water temperature is of vital
concern. When surface water is
between 33 and 50 degrees, they
lie in the depths. Spring holes

THE COVINGTON NEWS
The R. L. Cousins Wolverines
defeated the Corry High School
Tigers of Greensboro 19-14 in
what was a thrilling game until
the final whistle. The tilt was
played in Covington and marked
the first victory for Coach Gil
bert Turman’s initial team at
Cousins.
The Tigers scored a TD in
the first quarter on an end sweep
covering 66 yards. However,
this was the only ground threat
made by the Tigers throughout
the remainder of the game. The
Wolverine defense was devastat
ing to the Tigers offensive unit.
Other than the 66-yard TD of
the Tigers the Wolverines’ de
fense, led by Wilson Price, yield
ed very little ground.
The offensive unit of the Wol
verines gained over 350 yards in
total offense. With Charlie
Brown, Bobby (Jo) Harris, Char
les Malone and Forrest Sawyers
setting the pace on the ground.
Sawyers scored for the home
team on an 11-yard reverse with
good blocking from Thomas
Smith, Jimmy Thomas and Larry
White.
Charlie Brown scored twice;
his first score came in the third
period on a three-yard plunge
after climaxing a 54-yard drive.
Brown also came up with the big
play with four minutes remaining
in the game; trailing 14-12 after

FORREST SAWYERS (left with ball), R. L. Cousins High School halfback, is shown on his touchdown
run in the first quarter of the Wolverlnes-Greensboro game Friday night. The Wolverines won the
tilt 19-14 for their first game since starting football this fall under Head Coach Gilbert Turman.
Greensboro recovered a fumble
on the 1-yard line of the Wol
verines and scored, also trap
ping James Russell in the end
zone for a safety. With four
minutes left in the game QB
Larry Brown threw a 48-yard
TD strike to the halfback Charlie
Brown. The PAT was made by
Bobby (Jo) Harris. This making
the final score Cousins 19,
Greensboro 14.
“We feel that the effort our
boys exemplified on Friday night
was the effort of a “winner'*.
If they keep this “never die”
attitude we believe we will do
well for a first-year team,”
Coach Turman stated. “We are
especially proud of the running
of Bobby (Jo) Harris, who did an
excellent job of breaking tackles.
Harris finished the night with a
5.2 yard rushing average. Char
les Malone ran well from the
fullback position. Brown played
a tremendous game both offen
sively and defensively.”
Coach Turman added, “Our
line play was good on offense
and defense. Jimmy Thomas,
Billy Harris, Larry White, Jus
tine Malone, Thomas Smith, Fred
Henderson, Walter Marks, Wal
ter Collins, Joe Lightfoot, Wilson
Price and Johnny Brown played
well, Rufus Clark, Norrington
and Forrest Sawyers did good
jobs in the secondary.”
“So, overall we think our boys
played a good game. We made
some mistakes and we will be
working to correct them this
week. Now, we are getting ready
to play Monticello which Is a
big team that carries an Impres
sive record of 3-1,” coach Tur
man said.
R. L. Cousins plays Monticello
Saturday at 2 P.M. at Monticello.
