Youth’s Friend Buddy Baker Dies
Sports lovers in Covington and Newton County are saddened today
due to the death Tuesday of Buddy Baker, a former semi-pro base
ball player, Covington City Councilman and civic leader. He was one
of the founders of the present Newton Little League and devoted
much of his time and energy to that organization for some 10 years.
Buddy came to Covington several years ago from Alabama where
his high school coach was Red Lawson, former basketball mentor at
the University of Georgia. Baker was an employee of Covington
Mills and served as that firm’s athletic director until the mill
closed in 1963. Since that time he was employed at Lithonia Light
ing in Conyers, and recently at Brunswick Sports in Covington.
Baker was a recipient of the Covington Elks Club award in 1961
as the person in the county doing the most for youth of the county.
Youth athletics in the city and county will not be the same without
Buddy Baker.

CLEAN SPORTSMANSHIP URGED
There is nothing more important at any athletic event than clean
sportsmanship by fans, players and coaches. This axiom will
get a severe test Saturday night when the Rams meet Griffin High
at the Newton County gymnasium.
Supervising Principal Homer F. Sharp has issued a plea for all
people who attend the game Saturday night to adopt this plea: “Do
unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
“We ask that our loyal fans come to the game Saturday evening
and support our team, but please do not boo the officials, opposing
players or spectators. The attitude of our loyal students and adults
can have much to do with the outcome of the game.
“Remember, we are the hosts and it will aid our players, coaches
and cheerleaders if we conduct ourselves as ladies and gentlemen
during the game. This is especially true as we compete with the
remaining teams on our schedule,” Mr. Sharp stated.

Judson Caldwell is in some sort of rut at Presbyterian College
in South Carolina. He makes the dean’s list every time one is
issued. . .After three straight capacity houses in Covington, Wres
tling Promoter Gene Meyers, has booked former World Champion
Lou Thesz for a match this coming Saturday night. We wonder
where Meyers will put all the fans this week. . .Melody Barker can
stop the quickest of any basketball guard we have seen in some
time. The NCHS guard can dribble the ball up to the centerline
and stop on a dime.
Georgia’s new head swimming coach is ‘Moose’ Wammock. He
succeeds Dr. ‘Bump’ Gabrielson, who retired after 19 seasons at
Athens. . .The Bulldogs will have two Callaway boys on their foot
ball squads next season--Harold on the freshman team and Tim on
the varsity. Harold is a native of Covington but played his high
school football at Avon Park, Fla. . .A young NCHS sophomore
asked Coach Ronald Bradley what equipment he should bring to
the first practice last fall. Coach Brad said “Desire. I’ll fur
nish everything else needed.”
Tomorrow (January 27) the University of Georgia will be 182
years old. And, we’ll venture to say that the Bulldog spirit for at
hletics at the institution has never been higher than it is now. . .
The Rams will go into the February tournaments with another fine
season won-loss record if they can turn back Griffin and Avondale
in games here in Covington. We hate to say it, but it looks like the
Druid Hills team is too strong for our Rams. . .Rhonda Jeffries of
the NCHS girls team and Coach Richard Moore of Rockdale High
are first-cousins.
High school basketball teams in this area would do well to copy
the format of Avondale entertainment at their home games halftimes
and between games. Avondale has a band present and between games
their gymnastics team performs for the fans. . .Tony White, Terry
Smith, Tim Hopkins and Terry Rutledge are apparently looking
forward to the baseball seasons at their respective schools, Tenn.
Tech, University of Tenn., Middle Georgia College and West Georgia
College, respectively. . .Calvin Hartness of AA State North Fulton
High football is State High School “Coach of the Year” in that sport.
Bobby Holland, of nearby Monticello High, was named Class C
Coach of The Year by the Touchdowners of Atlanta.
Decatur High’s Coach Roger Kaiser will be the featured speaker
at the FCA basketball clinic at Emory University Gym Saturday
afternoon. Kaiser’s team recently defeated the great Druid Hills
High quint. . . Rockdale High Principal James Hudmon again pre
sented the trophies to the winners and runners-up Saturday night at
the NCHS gymnasium. He was the football coach at RCHS when the
first Newton Invitational was held in 1954. ..Auburn frosh coach Lee
Hayley has taken a job at North Carolina. Hayley was Tim Chris
tian’s freshman football coach at Auburn.
