MAGNOLIA thought by many to be a slow growing tree, actually
can be a relatively fast grower. With proper soil preparation and
fertilization, a Magnolia five to six feet tall when planted will reach
this size In ten years. The beautiful Magnolia shown here graces
the lawn of the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education.

the soil removed from the hole.
Approximately one-third by vol
ume of peat moss, leaf mold or
pine bark Is useful for this pur
pose. Plant the tree no deeper
than It grew In the nursery.
Mulch with pine straw or sim
ilar materials. The mulch should
be two to three inches after sett
ling and extend out three feet
from the trunk. Plan to water
during dry periods, especially
during the first and second grow
ing seasons.
Fertilize twice a year with a
balanced commercial fertilizer
such as an 8-8-8 analysis. Ap
ply one cup per Inch in diameter
of the trunk in early spring and
again In midsummer. Thoroughly
soak this into the soil. If a
balled and burlapped plant is
purchased, approximately a year
may be required for the plant
to become established and begin
the fast rate of growth.
The last tips concern pruning
magnolia trees. The most de
sirable tree shape results when
the foliage extends down to the
ground. Some gardeners destroy
this natural shape by removing
the lower limbs. This practice
Is not recommended. There Is a
practical purpose also for al
lowing the lower limbs to re
main. Foliage that extends to
the ground will conceal many of
the fallen leaves that occasionally
litter the ground underneath mag
nolia trees.
