High school basketball was in orbit Tuesday evening at the Druid
Hills gymnasium in Atlanta. Unfolding before the very eyes of a
packed gymnasium was an organized program of fanfare never seen
before by the disciplinarians of Dr. James Naismith’s game of putting
the round ball through the netted hole.
Here are just a few of the escapades that took place Tuesday:
Large signs were all over the walls of the gym, some saying
“Fig Newton’’, “Gore The Goats,” “Beat Newton County,” and
“Go Red Devils”.
Lights were turned out in the gym for the introduction of the home
team amid the fanfare of live band music and spotlighted by two large
spotlights high in the gym.
A drill team of Druid Hills girls scantilly dressed at the halftime.
They performed precision drills seen only at major college games.
Life-size (6 ft.) murals of Druid Hills players graced each end
of the gymnasium walls. These were action photos blown to enor
mous size.
Last, but not least, band music was furnished throughout the game.
The band boasted of some 20 members.

Former Campbell cage Coach Olin Presley was among the throng
who saw the R ams turn back Griffin here last week. Presley says that
Newton has the best team he has viewed this year and he has seen
most of the AA schools in the Atlanta area.. .“The House That Red
Built” is the way Kentucky Coach Adolph Rupp describes the Georgia
Coliseum in Athens. Rupp was referring to former Bulldog Coach
Red Lawson. . .Jim Youngblood and Frank Harscher are nip and tuck
for the scoring lead at the University of Georgia. Youngblood is
averaging 15.7 points per game and Harscher is averaging 14.9.
Thursday night, March 23 is the date set for the Newton High
basketball banquet. . .Ram Coach Ronald Bradley says that our
Newton Rams will be pitted against the teams of Region lAA in the
first round games of the State AA tournament in Atlanta. That may
mean we will meet Cairo or Berrien County in the initial contest.
Bishop Fulton J. Sheen lists “alcohol, dope and Bullfighting”
as evils of the past, present and future (and in that order, too). . .
The team I most fear in the upcoming State AA basketball tourna
ment in Atlanta is the Carver High team, an all-Negro outfit
In Tennessee’s State Tourney last year an all-Negro team entered
for the first time and won the open-classification tourney. . .
Butch Soper, a 17-year-old high school student in California
recently rolled three perfect games in a bowling league. Then on
top of that he had a 750 three - game series. And, by the way,
we never did have a perfect game rolled on either the Holiday or
Gold Crown Lanes in Covington.
Three positions of players on a soccer team are halfback, for
ward, and center-half . . . Winder-Barrow is hopeful of getting a
new $65,000 football stadium in the near future . . . Bill Corry,
one of the most successful high school football coaches in Georgia
history, has returned to Morgan County as principal of an elementary
school. Corry had a phenomenal gridiron record at Madison .. .
George Patton has played at three different positions in his last
three football games. He was a tackle against Georgia Tech, quar
terback vs SMU, and linebacker in the Senior Bowl game.
