Covingtonians who motored down to Auburn to see the twinbill cage

Newton had a bountiful and

In 13 seasons of covering bas

Another unusual feature of the

The Newton County Rams completed their regular season action
without a defeat In Region BAA as the Forsyth County Bulldogs were
beaten here Friday evening by the score of 60-41. However, this
game was an anti-climax to the thriller on Saturday evening at
the NCHS gymnasium when the Rams downed Avondale 69-66 in
overtime.
Richard Allen’s big 24 mark
ers and three of his teammates
scoring in double figures helped
the Rams maintain their un
defeated string through 123 str
aight at home. This was the first
time the Rams had been forced
to go into overtime for a win at
home.
The Newton girls also enjoyed
a measure of success Saturday
evening as they downed the Avon
dale sextet 82-45. This was the
most points scoredby Tom Wort
man’s team this season. It also
marked the 20th win of the year
for the NCHS team. They have
lost five games.
Aiding Allen In the win over
AAA Avondale were Thad Blan
kenship with 17 points, Gary
Wilkerson’s 14 and Terry Sch
ell’s 10. Starter Eddie Hinton
suffered a sprained ankle and had
to leave the encounter in the first
half. Tony Moon and Mike Hodges
played stellar ball in the absence
of Hinton.
The Rams had a four-point
bulge at the intermission, 29-
25. At the end of the third
quarter the Bradley Bombers
had built that advantage to 47-
41. The Blue Devils tied the
game with one second left on
the clock as Kevin Casey tipped
In a missed field goal try by
one of his teammates. This
deadlocked the affair at 61-all.
In the three-minute overtime
Grotton hit a free throw for
Avondale but he missed the bonus.
Thad Blankenship also hit his
first of two and missed the sec
ond. Terry Schell then made a
FT and Blankenship cripped in a
two-pointer. This made the score
65-62*
Avondale’s Casey then sank a
15-footer to make the count 65-
64. Here’s where Richard Allen
and Terry Schell showed that
Ice-water flows in their veins
“when the chips are down.” Al
len calmly sank both of his free
throw attempts and a few sec
onds later Schell did the same.
The scoreboard showed 69-64
at the time as the visitors were
given a gratis FG as the game
ended.
Now the NCHS teams turn their
thoughts to the Sub Region and
