Health Director
Stresses Need
For Seat Belts
State Health Director Dr. John
H. Venable today turned to the
state’s newspapers, and radio
and TV stations for assistance
in reducing the skyrocketing
automotive death toll in Georgia.
In an appeal leveled at the
state’s newspaper editors and
news directors, Dr. Venable as
ked that news reports of auto
mobile accidents -- particularly
those resulting in death or se
rious injury —carry Information
in the news story as to whether
the crash victims were wearing
seat belts.
“We know that seat belts save
lives and reduce the severity of
Injuries,” the health director
stated. “The problem now is to
get drivers and passengers to
use the belts that the law de
mands they have installed in
their cars.”
A 1964 state law makes front
seat belts mandatory in all new
model cars in Georgia. National
automotive manufacturers are
voluntarily installing rear seat
belts on most 1967 models.
Underlining the Importance of
seat belts to passenger safety,
Dr. Venable cited figures com
piled by the Automotive Crash
Injury Research project at Cor
nell University: “These national
figures—partially researched In
Georgia — Indicate that 5,000
Ilves a year could be saved by
the proper use of seat belts,”
he said, adding that “Injuries
could be reduced by at least
one third.”
Dr. Venable said that the re
quest to the state newsmen to
Include seat belt information in
accident stories “could show
daily evidence of the lives that
are being saved by using the
belts.” _
