Bicentennial Os American
Revolution Fast Approaching
By DR. ZACHARY TAYLOR JR.
Economics Department,
LaGrange College
The beginning of a new year
calls our attention to the fact
that the bicentennial of the Am
erican Revolution Is fast ap
proaching. The time for such a
celebration will arrive in just
eight years. The anniversary
of the Declaration of Indepen
dence is an opportune time for
all Americans to redevelop a
sense of gratitude to the found
ing fathers. In preparation for
the celebration we all should re
new our patriotism.
As Thomas Paine said of his
time, “these are times that try
men’s souls.” If we could put
ourselves back In time 200 years,
we would see that Indeed It was
trying. Settlers were trying to
work out compromises to avoid
the restrictions of the Proclama
tion of 1763. Dissatisfaction was
being expressed in many ways
with recent restrictive legislat
ion such as the Sugar Act, the
Colonial Currency Act, the Stamp
Act (which was repealed in 1766),
and the Quartering Act.
The new year would find the
suspension of the New York As
sembly, and the passage of the
Townshend Acts. Ensuing years
would uncover many Incidents
leading to the start of hostilit
ies at Lexington and Concord, and
finally, the Declaration of In
dependence.
In looking back over these 200
years, it is becoming in
creasinlv difficult to distinguish

fact from fiction, as we have
developed a wealth of folklore
about the events of the latter
part of the eighteenth century.
Folklore is good, but we should
not lose sight of reality. On the
other hand, those who delight in
debunking folklore should not lose
sight of the wondrous thing that
was created by our forefathers.
in a very short span of time
we have grown from a small
struggling country to the rich
est nation in the world. Material
well-being Is not in itself bad.
We should not be self-conscious
and ashamed of being comfortable
as some people would have us.
Americans are less likely to
be materialistic and possessed
by their material possessions
than other nationalities. In fact,
we may lean in the other direct
ion and appear to treat our pos
sessions with casual disdain.
Admittedly, not all of us have
shared in American affluence
as we might desire. But In all
of the current attention to the
“other America”, we should not
lose sight of the fact that our
poor are, for the most part,
much better off than the majority
of the world's population.
Despite imperfections, we have
come a long way In achieving the
type of society envisioned by the
founders. To paraphrase Winston
Churchill, we may not have the
best society on Earth, but it is
far superior to the second best.
We all know things that are wrong.
Let’s recognize them, and try
to correct them. However, let’s
realize the rightness of Am-
erica’s ways and be proud.
Man’s imperfectibllity pre
vents the creation of a Utopia
here on Earth. However, without
I being smug or self-righteous, we
I should believe that God is pleased
with what we are attempting to do.
In recent years It has become
fashionable on the part of many
who are most vocal In their com
mentary to downgrade pat
riotism. In varying degrees most
of us are in the middle, politi
cally speaking, but are assailed
from both left and right.
To the ultraliberal, any pat
riotism seems to be Imbued with
all the attributes of excessive
jingoism. The zeal of patriotism
can be carried to an extreme.
However, the true patriot is not
blind to either our faults or the
virtues of others.
A period of preparation for
a celebration Is a proper time
for rededlcatlon and develop
ment of the proper pride in coun
try.
