Scouting In the Newton-Rock
dale District of the Atlanta Area
Council, Boy Scouts of America,
was the central theme of the
Covington Kiwanis Club program
Thursday at the Davis House Res
taurant. Sam Ramsey and George
Hutchinson, Klwanians and pro
minent in Boy Scout work in New
ton County, were in charge of the
program.
Several Scouts and adult lead
ers of Packs, Troops and Posts,
had a part on the program. Char
les Robertson, Cubmaster of
Pack 222; James Pinson, Scout
master of Troop 222; and John
Eller of the Post 222 Explorers,
gave interesting talks on the re
spective work of their organizat
ions. Howard Brooks, chair
man of the Newton-Rockdale Dis
trict, spoke briefly.
Scouts Keith Connell and Gerry
Katz gave their speeches which
won them an award in the recent
Patrick Henry Speaking Contest
in the Atlanta Area Council and
the N-R District.
Many visitors were present
at the meeting Thursday. John
Alford, a holder of the Silver
Beaver Award, and past president
of the Kiwanis Club, was present
as were two inter-club meeting
groups, from South DeKalb and
Conyers. From South DeKalb
were Webb Scofield, Roy Holland,
Ed Alexander and Bob Bailey.
From Conyers were Ladd Gray,
Sid Herring and Dick Walters.

Manpower Training To Aid
Employees, Employers Here

Newton County businesses and
industries both large and small
have an opportunity to train new
employees or upgrade present
employees through the Upper Oc
mulgee Economic Opportunity
Commission’s Manpower de
velopment program.
Under the program businesses
and Industries are paid a part
of the training expenses for a
period not less than four weeks
or no more than 24 weeks, de
pending on the type of training
period.
All persons, who are now un
employed, are invited to get In
touch with the local office.
This office will be working
closely with businesses and in
dustries in Covington and Newton
County, thereby being able to
place persons in various jobs

Training In NJ

USCG, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wil
liam E. Knight of 37 Ivy St.,
Porterdale, was graduated from
eight weeks of basic training, at
the Coast Guard Recruit Training
Center here.
Guided bv experienced Coast
Guard senior petty officers
during his training, he studied
the fundamentals of such military
and naval subjects as seaman
ship, Infantry drill, shipboard
procedures, and at-sea survival
techniques. The basics of mili
tary customs and courtesies, and
familiarization with the Coast
Guard’s mission and respon
sibilities polished the skills he
needed to make the transition
from civilian to Coast Guards
man.
