Luck’s Tech
Team Needs
Pitching
ATLANTA—Home and home
contests with traditional rivals
Georgia, Auburn and Clemson
highlight a 32-game schedule for
the Georgia Tech Baseball Team
announced today by Athletic Di
rector Bobby Dodd.
Tech’s first game will be
against East Tennessee State
here Saturday afternoon, March
18. The Yellow Jackets then go
to Valdosta State for contests
March 24 and 25.
Head baseball Coach Jim Luck
said that pitching is the team’s
big question mark as Tech works,
indoors or out as the weather
permits, for the season opener.
Coach Luck said that the 1967
squad would be built largely
around seniors Cleve Fowler (C),
Donnie Noggle (IB), Al Dickin
son (3B), Roy Jarrett (OF) and
W. J. Blaine (OF). Randy Car
roll (2B), who was also a mem
ber of Tech’s nationally ranked
1965 team, like Crook has sign
ed a professional contract.
Tops among the returning
juniors, in addition to Moore and
Tomasovich, are shortshop Ken
Bonifay and outfielder Ronnie
King.

Here are the AA Region champs and runnerup team in each
section of the State of Georgia;
(The number of points by which the champ won is given in paren
thesis.)
Region lAA: Cairo (8), Crisp County
Region 2AA: Coffee County (7), Ware County
Region 3AA: Northside (2), Carver
Region 4AA: Headland (6), Russell
Region SAA: Sandy Springs (8), North Springs
Region 6AA: Wills (8), Cedartown
Region 7AA: Ringgold (6), West Fannin
Region BAA: Hart County (4), Newton County
Among the Newton Countians remaining in Hartwell for the BAA
Region finals were; Mr. and Mrs. Olin Allen and children, Mr. and
Mrs. Guy Schell and children, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hinton, Mr. and
Mrs. Henry Rogers, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Gainer and Gil, Mrs. Mar
ion Piper, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Banks and children. Mr. and Mrs.
J. C. McClure and children, Mr. and Mrs. Walker Harris and
daughter, Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Campbell, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Dobbs
and Billy. Tnose wno spent me nights in Anderson, S.C. (22 miles
away) were; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hays, Mr. and Mrs. Walter
Partee and Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Gardner. The cheerleaders
and Mr. and Mrs. Willie Campbell and Mr. and Mrs. Homer
Sharp spent the night in Royston.
In 15 years of baseball, from Jacksonville, Fla. to Atlanta, Hank
Aaron is now earning an annual salary of SIOO,OOO. That’s tops for
a Brave player (No, Spahn never reached that mark). . .Three
months of football in Atlanta last fall (by Georgia Tech and the
Atlanta Falcons) brought some $46-million dollars to the economy
of the city. That figure tops the 6-month tenure of the Atlanta
baseball Braves luring for the city. . .The Rams’ defeat at Hart
well was the first by the Bulldogs since March of 1959, Bradley s
first year as varsity mentor.
We can’t see why the college basketball radio announcers refer
to the two game officials as a referee and an umpire. Both work
the game in the same style. . .The last six head defensive coaches
at Georgia Tech have all gone on to be head coaches of
college teams around the country: Bob Woodruff, Ray Graves,
Charlie Tate, Marvin Bass, Jim Carlen and Bud Carson. . .Bob
Turley of the Atlanta Braves organization was a visitor to Coving
ton on Feb. 21 and was a guest of Howard Milligan at the Rotary
Club meeting at noon.
parents who wish to attend the Newton Ram Appreciation Basketball
Banquet on March 23, should buy their tickets as soon as possible.
One of the locations where tickets may be purchased is at the Newton
Sheriffs’ Office, Mrs. Henry Odum, Jr. The telephone number is
786-2634. . .The consensus of opinion around Covington is that if the
Rams can defeat Cairo Tuesday in the State tourney the NCHS team
may go all the way. Loyal cage fans here really fear the Syrup
makers.
Among famous soccer players of former years are Beatle
Paul McCartney and Nikita Khrushchev.. .After eight straight wins
over Hart County, the Rams finally lost one to the Hart team
50-46 Saturday night. This was our only loss this season to a
team other than a AAA outfit. . .And, by the way, Mr. Kinghorn,
manager of the Lakeview Restaurant at Hartwell informed us that
his son played high school basketball in Indiana with Oscar Ro
bertson, now of the Cincy Royals. . .Columbus High’s Dan Kirk
land, a forward, is a cousin of Covington’s Mrs. Sam Gainer. Kirkland
was a star of the Columbus team Friday night in the AAA semis at
Columbus.

Tourney Notes
Pandemonium broke loose in
the Hart County gymnasium Sat
urday night just as soon as the
Bulldogs downed the Rams SO
-46 for the first time in eight
years. The Hart players hoist
ed Coach Bill Ensley on their
shoulders and carried him all
the way around the gym court.
