Jackets Shooting 49.2%
In Seasonal Averages
ATLANTA—When a team has
no starter over 6-4, it must
shoot well to win. And hot
shooting has become the trade
mark of the Georgia Tech team
in recent weeks as the Yellow
Jackets have reeled off ten vic
tories in their last 11 starts
in a determined bid for post
season recognition.
Led by All-America aspirant
Phil Wagner, the Jackets are
hitting an unbelievable 49.2 per
cent of their field goal trys.
Wagner, the team scoring lea
der with a 19.2 average, is hit
ting 56 per cent including 10 of
11 in Tech’s recent victory over
Georgia.
If their season percentage is
unbelievable, then the Jackets’
gunning for the past 11 games
is nothing short of remarkable.
During that streak, which in
cludes an upset victory over the
nation’s then No. 2 ranked North
Carolina Tar Heels. The Jac
kets, now 15-7, have been over
50 per cent in nine of these
contests with a record-busting
64.4 against Clemson, 61.9 ag
ainst Georgia and 58.2 against
THE COVINGTON NEWS
North Carolina being the top
efforts.
Coach John “Whack” Hy
der’s quintet seems likely to
break the school mark for field
goal shooting of 44.4 set just
last season. They may also
break the Tech record for
scoring average--80.3 per game
-for total points -- 2,088--and
for free throw percentage--73.4
The current band of Jackets are
averaging 82.2 per outing; have
scored 1,809; and are hitting
74.3 per cent of their charity
tosses.
Tourney Notes:

For the first time in the his
tory of Georgia AA basketball,
the two teams who played in
State finals last March will also
open the AA tourney on March 7—
Newton County and Cairo.
The final ratings of AA last
week in The Atlanta Journal had
Cairo in first place and Newton
County in second. Northside was
third and Carver fourth, and Hart
County fifth.
Members of the surgeonfish
family have a built-in stiletto on
either side of the tail, similar to
a doctor’s scalpel, which gives
the family its name. When frigh

swiping an adversary with its
knife, according to scientists at

Ancient.. .
But Also Wise
Old ideas are not necessarily
bad ideas, it’s just that they’ve
been around for a long while.
In fact, say the fishing author
ities at Mercury outboards, some
of the following ancient angling
ideas are so good they’re worth
considering each new fishing day.
Safety pins, for example, are
indispensable. In addition to sol
ving apparel repair problems,
they are fine for keeping swivels,
hooks, rings and bell sinkers
clipped together in neat, orderly
fashion.
When fish are finicky, tie on
a trailer hook with a small bait
behind your favorite plug. This
tasty morsel following the re
gular “attention - getter” often
provides that extra strike-pro
voking incentive.
Don’t always shy away from
weeds. If fishing in a water
lily-covered, bass-laden pond,
deliberately cast a light surface
lure onto the pads. Gently twitch
the plug to make the vegetation
move as if a frog or other crea
ture is slipping around on top.
After a few minutes of teasing,
topple the plug off into the wa
ter, and get set for a strike.

Don’t cast bread upon fishing
waters. Instead, get several
day-old unsliced loaves, hollow
out a caviety and toss the loaves
in a field. In the morning, you
can harvest a crop of captive
crickets that’ll be far more ef
fective with the fish.
When fishing with worms, place
the bait in a container that can
be kept in an inverted position,
such as a coffee can with a snap
on plastic lid. Worms gravitate
to the bottom, so if the removable
top is on the bottom, the worms
will be on top when the can is
uprighted.
