meet the Newton County Jaycees (men) in a basketball game at the
NCHS gym tonight for the benefit of the March of Dimes. Tipoff
is set for 8 o’clock. There will be halftime show, too.

The Newton County Jaycees
will meet the Atlanta Playboy
Bunnies tonight in a benefit bas
ketball game for the March of
Dimes. The game will be played
at the Newton High gym at 8
o’clock. A small donation of
50 cents will allow you to see
one of the most exciting and
colorful games of all-time.

cee super all-stars says his team
is in fantastic shape for the en
counter. There are many super
stars on this unbelievable team.

Porterdale has been severely
burned in Viet Nam and is a
patient at the Naval Hospital,
Portsmouth, Virginia. Cards
have been cheering him while
he recovers and his address is;

Lt. Turner Has Duty At South Pole

LT. FRANK B. TURNER of Covington will have spent three years
with Operation Deep Freeze at the South Pole on March 7. He is Flag
Lt. to Admiral Frank Bakutls and is based at Christ Church, New
Zealand. Lt. Turner’s wife, Kay, teaches art in the New Zealand
High School. Frank Is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nat Turner of Cov
ington.
Newton County Gets Grant
For Disadvantaged Children
U. S. Senators Herman E, Tal
madge and Richard B. Russell
today announced the allotment of
$132,353 to Newton County for
special programs for educa
tionally disadvantaged children.
The funds, forfiscal year 1967,
were made available under the
provisions of Title I of the Ele
mentary and Secondary Edu
cation Act of 1965, and will
finance programs for 935 edu
cationally deprived children In
the county. Senators Talmadge
and Russell said. The total state
111 at the St. Joseph’s Infirmary,
having been admitted on Sunday,
February 26.

Mrs. Marvin McClellan has
been, a patient at the Newton
County Hospital this week and Is
wished an early recovery.

Sincere sympathy is extended
to Mrs. Eula Baird and relatives
in their bereavement at the death
of Jack Baird, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Tom Baird, former resi
dents of Porterdale, who now re
side in Cedartown, where Mr.
Baird is affiliated with the Geor
gia State Patrol. Jack was ser
iously burned when a fire gutted
the apartment house in College
Park where he was residing on
February 17. He passed away
in Atlanta on Wednesday morn
ing, February 22. Mrs. Baird
who has been visiting Mr. and
Mrs. Tom Baird and Jane Ann
returned to her home in Porter
dale on Friday, February 26.

called home due to the death of
his father, Frank Campbell, on
Wednesday, February 22, after
a long Illness.

Hospital on Tuesday, February

Baptists Give
Record Amount
During 1966
ATLANTA—Georgia Baptists
gave a record $10,722,054.95 for
their mission, educational and
benevolent enterprises in 1966,
according to Dr. Searcy S. Garr
ison, Atlanta, Executive Secret
ary-Treasurer, Georgia Baptist
Convention.
The all-time record was an
Increase of $1,310,464.42 over
the previous record in 1965 of
$9,411,590.53. The total in
cludes amounts given through
the denomination’s Cooperative
Program, as well as designated
funds. Through the Cooperative
Program, many of the 3010 Bap
tist churches affiliated with the
Convention gave to support mini
stries in Georgia, the United Sta
tes, and throughout the world.
Os the $10,722,054.95 amount,
Cooperative Program gifts were
$5,037,508.08, an Increase of 6.9
per cent over 1965. Designated
and miscellaneous gifts were
$5,684,546.87.

cently returned to the 4th Infan
try Division base camp from
“Operation Cedar Falls,” the
largest operation In Vietnam to
date.
He helped deny the Viet Cong
use of the “Iron Triangle” as a
staging center for attacks and
acts of terrorism on the Saigon
area.
