FIRST QUARTER action in the Newton Ram-Cairo game Tuesday
in the State AA Tourney at the Alexander Coliseum, Atlanta, saw
both teams tense as could be. This long-range photo shows Richard
Allen shooting as Terry Schell (40) and Gerald English (23 in black)
battle for the rebound. Other NCHS players shown are Gary Wilkerson
(44) Eddie Hinton (42) and Thad Blankenship (20). Cairo players
include Steve Maxwell (25), Wood Montgomery (45) and Hubert Massey
'43). The Rams won the battle in two overtimes 45-42.
The Blab Slab
Bob Richardson’s Young Harris College team lost a heartbreaker
at Tallahassee, Fla. last week in a four-college meet. St John’s
Junior College edged Coach Luke Rushton’s boys via a field goal
at the buzzer by Y-H that the timer ruled was shot after time had
expired. . . Coach Sid Hatfield of Tennessee Tech was scouting the
A A Tournament in Atlanta Tuesday. Hatfield is head baseball and
assistant basketball coach at TPL He is a native of Porterdale
... One of the early arrivals at the tourney Tuesday afternoon was
Tim Christian of Auburn. Tim enjoyed some of his greatest glory
on the Coliseum court. He was MVP in the 1964 tourney when the
Rams were State Champs.
There will definitely be several SEC schools much stronger next
season on the basketball court. For instance, Alabama and Mississi
ppi have their entire first strings back, and Coach Ken Rosemond’s
Georgia team is expected to be stronger with several freshmen mov
ing up to varsity status. . .Although Hart County’s Bill Ensley s
girls did not make it to the state tourney this year he has had eight
straight entries for both his boys and girls since he has been at
Hartwell. . .Pat Floyd performed at a forward position for the NCHS
sextet for four seasons and in only one game did she fail to score
a field goal. That was in the Newton-Franklin game Friday night
at Cumming.
The Atlanta Chiefs soccer opener will be played at Baltimore on
April 16 The home opener for the Chiefs will be at Atlanta Stadium
on April 22 . . . Newton High’s Tony Moon may be another athlete
who may excell in more than one sport. He is presently a member
of the Ram basketball team and could be the QB on the Ram football
team next fall . . . This year marks the first time in nine seasons

Coach Luke Rushton of Young-Harris College, a visitor in Cov

to see changed in college basketball: (1) elimination of the “stall”
type game, and (2) a curb on the zone style of defensive play . ..
Billy Lothridge has the best ball-carrying average of any Atlanta
Falcon back. He lugged the ball one time last season and gained
22 yards. It was on a fake punt situation ... And New Orleans will
be shooting at a per game average attendance of 56,526 set by the
Atlanta Falcons last season at Atlanta Stadium.
Tony Cloninger of the Atlanta Braves has won 38 games in the past
two years. If he can come up with 20 victories this season the
Braves may better their fifth place standing of the past two years ...
Yogi Wilkerson says he met and talked with Tom Boerwinkle, the

Yogi said “I looked like a midget by the side of Boerwinkle."

Bobby Capes’ (native of Covington and first NCHS Ram on a foot
ball scholarship) coach Conley Snidow at Wofford College in S. C.
has retired as coacn of The Terriers.. .UCLA’s Lew Alcindor says
that he would rather play defense than offense. He says defense is
more important. . .Former Boston Celtic Coach Red Auerback has
named an all-pro team and Wilt Chamberlain is not on that team.
He names Bill Russell as the center. . .Georgia’s best chance of
getting on National TV this fall appears to be the Mississippi game,
at Jackson on October 14.

Edged Newton Girls 29 To 27
Newton County girls basketball
team lost a Friday night semi
final Region BAA game to Frank
lin County at Cumming as Lion
Forward Alice Smith hit a field
goal in the last five seconds of
the game. That play gave the
Franklin County team the vic
tory 29-27 and they downed the
host team Forsyth County in Sat
urday’s finals 38-36.
Newton, playing a preliminary
game Saturday evening, was
beaten by Hart County 51-44.
Coach Tom Wortman’s team
ended the 1966-67 season with 22
victories and seven defeats.
The low-score of the Newton-
Franklin game was a puzzle to
most of the fans present for the
game. It was not a stall affair
as both teams missed shot after
shot from the floor. Also the free
throw shooting was below par for
both squads.
While Coach Wortman did not
alibi for the loss, it should be
pointed out that two of his re
gular starters, Judy Clay and
Helen Parker, had sprained ank
les and were hampered from ac
hieving their full ability in the
games.
