MIAMI FLORIDA — This "royal duck” is released in its new
home in Florida after being brought to the United States from
Venezuela. Ninety seven of the birds were imported here by
Gulf Oil Corporation as part of its world-wide activities in the
field of conservation. If the big ducks thrive in Florida, it is
hoped that in about ten years they will provide hunters with a
new suedes of game bird in that part of the country. The Florida
Game P and Fresh Water Fish Commission is in charge of getting
the roval duck started at various locations throughout the state,
and will protect the small population while it multiplies.

BAMA, GEORGIA PICKED IN SEC
The Birmingham News’ annual spring football poll has tabbed the
University of Alabama as tops in the SEC with Georgia second.
The opinion of 10 sports writers in the poll picked Alabama on
seven ballots and Georgia on three. The two teams shared the 1966
SEC crown.
In the pre-season offense and defense squads picked from the con
ference Georgia has five players on the two squds. Alabama has
four. The Georgians named include: Tackle Edgar Chandler and
Tackle Don Hayes, and Fullback Ronnie Jenkins on the offensive
team. On the defensive unit Bulldogs Bill Stanfill, tackle, and half
back Terry Sellers are honored.
It is interesting to note the selections of News as: (1) Alabama.
(2) Georgia, (3) Tennessee, (4) Ole Miss, (5) Florida, (6) LSU, (7) Au
burn, (8) Kentucky, (9) Miss. State, (10) Vanderbilt.

Robert Train, President of Bibb Manufacturing Company, was at
Porterdale Saturday and Sunday to help officially open Billy Crowell’s
new nine holes of his golf layout on Brown Bridge Road. This was an
occasion for us to ask Mr. Train if it was he or All-America End
Larry Kelly of Yale (back in 1930) who kicked a loose football and
caused a rule revision for collegiate football.
Train, the other end on that great Yale team, said that “Kelly
kicked the ball and it was accidental.’’ College ot'icials and rule
makers in 1930 thought and insisted that Kelly kicked the ball on
purpose in order to make the recovery some 30 yards down the
field of play. We also asked Mr. Train if he remembered the great
play-by-play announcer of that period Ted Husing. “Yes, he was one
of my best friends in those days.”

Clifford Capps of Covington shot a hole-in-one at the Highlands
Golf Course Saturday. He made his ace on the number 6 hole which
is a 183-yarder. Capps used a four-iron.. .Among Covingtonians
at the Brave-Cardinal baseball game Thursday evening at Atlanta
Stadium were Rucker Ginn, Buddy Daniel and D. L. Maddox. And,
by the way, this brings to mind that Rucker’s father was a teammate
of the immortal Ty Cobb, when both Mr. Ginn and Ty were living
in North Georgia ... Jesup and Walker are in the State AA baseball
playoffs in a two of three game series. Defending champ Headland
was beaten by Jesup last week.
There were 213 new golf courses opened in the United States
during the year 1966 . . . Another new fine 9-holes of the Porterdale
Golf Course was opened Saturday as Bibb Manufacturing Company
President Robert Train hit the first ball off the Number 10 tee.
F oiks who had the biggest smiles as Mr. Train hit a 200-yard drive
down the fairway were: Billy Crowell, manager and pro at the
course; M. B. Shaw, Porterdale Agent of Bibb; and B. B. Snow,
former agent at Porterdale and now a V-P.
Gary Wilkerson has been named as an alternate selection for the
North Georgia high school All-Star basketball team. Newton had two
players in the game last August Bob Richardson and Wayne Hall
. . . Os all the all-time All-Star teams chosen of baseball players
in the entire major leagues, we can’t see how they leave off the name
of the immortal Ty Cobb. He was the first player named to the
Baseball Hall of Fame, and he had a.367 lifetime batting average...
The innovation of using a pinch-hitter for the pitcher in a big league
game is not new. The same thing came up in 1929 and was voted
down.
Ram Cage Mentor Ronald Bradley has released the 1967-68
slate for the local high school. The card includes 22 games and
AAA teams on the schedule are Griffin, Druid Hills, and Wood
ward Academy. The two big games at home will be against Grif
fin on November 21, and Druid Hills on February 3 ... Coach Red
Blaik of Army had a philosophy on winning. He said, “To dilute
the will to win, is to destroy the purpose of the game (of football).”
Newton County sports fans were grieved to learn of the death of
Mrs. Pearl Young on Friday. Mrs. Young was a faithful fan at the
football, basketball and baseball games until ill health forced her to
be hospitalized. . .Coach Wilbur Fisher of the Rams says that the
squad will attend football camp at Lake Jackson from August 15-20.
Fisher also said that Coach Bobby Way and his Evans High team will
be at the FFA Camp at the same time.

ALMOST ALL of us have warts at some time in our lives, reports
the American Medical Association. Ordinary warts are not dangerous
to health and about half eventually disappear even if untreated.
They are, however, contagious and can be transmitted from one
person to another. Scratching or picking at warts sometimes
causes them to spread. They can also be spread by brushing and
combing the hair if there are warts in the scalp or by shaving
over them. Warts can occur on any part of the skin, but most often
appear on the hands, fingers and soles of the feet.

Ben Schwartzwalder, Syracuse football coach, says, “I don’t
think the Northern teams will go to the Southern brand of football,
which features small, light and quick players. For one thing, it’s
difficult to find small, light, quick people in the North, iust as South
ern boys don’t tend to be 240-pounders. Also, I’ve found that most
Northern high-school players like to stay in the North and we have
trouble getting Southern boys up to Syracuse.’’

THE ANNUAL
DISAPPEARING ACT
Despite the way it may seem,
fish really don’t disappear dur
ing winter.
They’re still in the same
water they inhabited last fall,
but are less concerned about
food. If they don’t turn up too
often, the blame is not entirely
on the fish; anglers don’t turn
up too often these days either.
However, game fish are pres
ent, feeding on a limited scale,
and they can be caught, say
the fishing authorities at Mer
cury outboards. Particularly,
they add, by fishermen with
the necessary fortitude and
knowledge of cold weather
aquatic conditions to get the
job done.
In mid-continent and south
ern regions where shoreline
skim ice forms only occasional
ly, temperature levels are not
so marked. In such waters, the
key spots are tributaries that
introduce a high supply of
fresh oxygen. Other locations
that attract a congregation of
fish are underwater springs
that form local “hot” spots.
Work baits and lures as if
fish are nearly asleep, advise
the Mercury folks, so the slug
gish lunkers can catch up if
*hey want.
