Major Ernest M. Wood, Jr.,
son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Maynard
Wood, Sr., of Covington, re
ceived the Army Commendation
Medal, (Ist OLC), for outstanding
service while assigned to the 50th
Artillery Group Air Section (Air
Defense) in St. Paul, Minnesota
from Oct. of 1965 to the 24th
of May, 1967.
His wife, Leah and their two
daughters Maleah, 10, and Julie,
8 were present at the special
ceremony that took place on the
15th of May.
Major Wood has been in the
Army since Oct. of 1954. hi
Oct. of 1955 he was commis
sioned a 2nd Lieutenant In Art
illery at Fort Sill, Okla, hi
1956 he attended the Army Aviat
ion School at Fort Rucker, Ala
bama and has been a pilot since.
He has served in Germany, Geo
rgia, Alabama, Vietnam and
Minnesota. He Is a graduate of
the Georgia Military College
(1954) and the Commanders Gen
eral Staff College (1964).
Prior to departing for Vietnam,
Major Wood will attend a seven
week course for transition train
ing In the Chinook, a medium
transport helicopter, the largest
tandem motor helicopter In the
world. It Is now being used in
Vietnam for transporting art
illery.
