Newton 4-H’ers Win District Honors At Rock Eagle

Newton County Junior and Senior 4-H Club members returned
from district project achievement meetings at Rock Eagle with four
first place honors.
Newton County 4-H’ers joined
other Four-H champions from
some 25 area counties for the
1967 achievement meeting. All
of them went to Rock Eagle with
their hearts set on becoming
district winners in their farm,
home and community projects.
Well presented demonstrations
and good records earned district
honors for four Newton County
4-H’ers, according to Miss Caro
lyn Joyner, Extension home eco
nomist, and Ed Hunt, county
agent. District winners from
Newton County include: Mark
Hitchcock, Veterinary Science
project; David Maughon, Swine
project; Tommy Curtis, Dairy
Judging project; and Sandl Ison,
Fruit and Vegetable Production
project. One of the local first
place winners--Sandl Ison, asen
lor member, will now have a cha
nce at a state title when the Geo
rgia 4-H Congress is held in
Atlanta In August. If she wins
in Atlanta, she will get to attend

a district title is as high as they
can go. In addition to the four
first place winners, 15 Newton
Countians came home with sec
ond and third place honors.

all the local 4-H’ers consider
themselves winners, regardless
of whether they took top honors
in their projects. Assembly pro
grams, vesper services, group
discussions, new friends and re
creational activities were also
features of the district program.
Five Newton County 4-H’ers
tried their hands at 4-H style
politicing. Sandi Ison ran for
President; Leslie Fuller ran for
Boy’s Vice-President; Jan Hitch
cock ran for Girl’s Vice Presi
dent; Carol Thomas ran for Sec
retary - Treasurer; and Jerry
Mclntosh ran for Reporter.
Sandi Ison was elected Presi
dent of the Northwest Extension
District 4-H Council which con
tains 27 counties.
ART HARGROVE of Newton County has been prominently associated
with 4-H work since his retirement from the service some 10 years
ago. During the recent 4-H meeting at Rock Eagle he taught a class on
“Preparing A Demonstration.” Mr. Hargrove is shown at the drawing
board in one of the classes.
