Rep. Ballard To
Speak At Kiwanis
Newton County Representative
Donald Ballard will be the guest
speaker at the Covington Kiwanis
Club meeting Thursday at the
Davis House Restaurant at 1 o’-
clock.
In charge of the program today
Is Phillip Cohen and he will In
troduce the speaker. Mr. Cohen
has been program chairman of
the local civic club for the past
two months.
Rep. Ballard Is expected to
comment on past, present and
future plans of the Georgia Ge
neral Assembly. Also, he will
ejcplaln many of the points In
corporated In local legislation

Oxford-Covington Plant Man
ager Lou Karman was the guest
speaker at the Covington Kiwanis
Club meeting Thursday at the
Davis House Restaurant.
Mr. Karman gave a resume
of the Hercules firm from Its
founding to the present day. He
also showed samples of olefin
fiber to be made in Covington.
A film entitled "Any Day In The
Week” was also shown to em
phasize the many fine qualities
of Herculon fibers.
He stated that his firm now
employs some 30,000 people in
the United States and that they
have 40 plants in America. Her
cules makes 65 colors of yam
for the carpeting industry.

a comparison he stated that the
Covington, Virginia, plant had
1,500 workers after five years
of operation.

the meeting Thursday. He was
Ronald Rice of Annapolis, the
guest of S. J. Morcock.
First National
Bank Declares
$2 Dividend
At the recent monthly meet
ing of the Board of Directors
of the First National Bank of
Newton County the directors de
clared the second cash dividend
to be paid to the stockholders
on July 1, 1967. Directors de
clared a $2.00 per share divid
end for the 7,500 shares out
standing. The first cash dividend
paid by the Bank was on July 1,
1966, at SI.OO per share.
First National Bank began op
erations in Covington on August
28, 1963, and has grown steadily
since to become a leading finan
cial organization in the County
with total deposits of better than
three million dollars. The aver
age outstanding loans of the bank
now average almost two million
dollars with total capital accounts
of better than $340,000.00. Be-
Chamber Commerce Meeting
Set For Monday, July 10
The Covington-Newton Coun
ty Chamber of Commerce will
have Its regular monthly meet
ing on Monday, July 10, Instead of
Monday, July 3, according to C of
C President Grady Coleman. The
date change Is made because of
the long-weekend holiday of the
Fourth of July.
The July 10th meeting will be
held at the Teen Can building on
Newton Drive at 12:30 p. m. An
nouncement of the program will
be given In next week’s Coving
ton News.

19 Traffic
Violations In
Past Week
Covington City Judge E. W.
Strozier banged his gavel Monday
morning and before the session
was concluded he had called 19
traffic violation cases. Most
of the persons charged did not
report for trial and therefore
forfeited their bonds.
Six persons were charged with
speeding during the past week,
four for reckless driving, four
for driving under the influence
of Intoxicants, two for driving
without a license, two running
stop signs and one for operat
ing a car with a loud muffler.
Other cases called for trial
included eight persons charged
with drunkenness and two for
disorderly conduct.
